    • In an endoscopic or laparoscopic instrument assembly, an elongate tubular instrument guide is inserted into a biopsy channel of an endoscope or laparoscope. The tubular instrument guide is provided with a distal end portion having a spring bias tending to form the distal end portion into an arcuate configuration. The tubular instrument guide is longitudinally slidable in the biopsy channel, whereby the distal end portion may be alternately maintained in a relatively straightened configuration in a distal end of the biopsy channel and moved outside of the biopsy channel to assume the arcuate configuration. An elongate flexible endoscopic or laparoscopic instrument is slidably inserted into the tubular instrument guide so that an operative tip at a distal end of the instrument may project outwardly from the distal end portion upon an ejection of at least a part of the distal end portion of the tubular instrument guide from the biopsy channel.

    • An assembly for inhibiting catheter sepsis comprises an intravenous catheter inserted through a skin surface at an insertion point, a patch attached to the skin surface about the insertion point so as to cover a region of the skin surface and a segment of the catheter at the skin surface, and an ancillary tube having a distal end portion disposed between the patch and the skin surface upon an application of the patch to the skin surface. In the distal end portion, the ancillary tube has an outlet port which is located between the patch and the skin surface upon application of the patch to the skin surface. The ancillary tube has an inlet port spaced in a proximal direction from the outlet port so that the inlet port is accessible via a needle upon application of the patch to the skin surface.

    • An assembly for use in drainage of an abscess comprises an outer tubular member provided in a distal end portion with a plurality of longitudinal slits. The distal end portion of the tubular member has a spring bias tending to form the distal end portion into a substantially spherical expanded configuration to anchor the distal end portion of the tubular member in an abscess. An inner tubular member or obturator is inserted into the outer tubular member and has a distal end provided with a cutting edge projecting from the outer tubular member. Locking components on the obturator and the outer tubular member serve to maintain the latter in a stretched out cylindrical configuration enabling insertion of the distal end portion into an abscess. A needle on the distal end of the tubular member serves to inject a quantity of anesthetic into the patient at the abscess site. A similar structure is disclosed in an intravenous catheter assembly.

    • In a method for obtaining a biopsy of tissues of an internal organ of a patient, such as a liver or spleen, an incision is formed in a blood vessel of the vascular system of the patient and a biopsy device including a flexible elongate tubular member and a biopsy-taking component at a distal end of the tubular member is inserted through the incision into the blood vessel. The biopsy device is manipulated from outside the patient to maneuver the distal end portion of the device through the vascular system to the internal organ. A blood vessel wall in the organ is pierced with a sharp distal tip of the biopsy device upon arrival of the biopsy means at the internal organ. The biopsy device is pushed so that the biopsy-taking component enters the internal organ, the biopsy-taking component being operated to capture a sample of tissues of the internal organ. Subsequently, the biopsy device with the captured tissue sample is removed from the vascular system of the patient through the blood vessel and the incision.
