    • PURPOSE:To form a flat rail joint without causing defects on a welded zone by bending a groove part of rails on which butt welding is to be performed to a specific shape and bringing a backing jig with a specific shape having a recessed part at the center into close contact with the rail bottoms to perform welding. CONSTITUTION:When the rails 1a and 1b are set up against each other and subjected to butt welding, the grove part of the rails 1a and 1b is bent in advance by the direction and size in which deformation caused by welding heat or soldification and shrinkage of weld metal is corrected. Meanwhile, the backing jig 2 which has a protuberant cross-sectional shape having slopes in the directions contrary to each other and is provided with the recessed part for the purpose of forming a back bead and storing slag is prepared. This backing jig 2 is arranged to the bottoms of the rails 1a and 1b and the groove part thereof is subjected to build-up by welding. By this method, the rails 1a and 1b bent in advance are corrected by performing welding and the straight rail joint without defects on the welded zone is formed.

    • PURPOSE:To suppress crater cracking and to obtain a welded joint with high performance by starting a welding current value at a specific value and changing over it immediately to a specific value at the time of performing enclosed arc welding extending over the heads from the bellies of rails after multi-layer welding of the rail legs is completed. CONSTITUTION:In butt welding of the rails using a coated arc electrode containing 0.4-1.0% C, after the rail feet 1 are subjected to multi-layer welding, craters 3 of the multi-layer welding end of a rising part 2 are overlapped on lower layers 4 to form reinforcements of weld which are extended to the outside from rail cross sections. Further, with an enclosed arc weld zone 5 extending over the heads from the bellies of the rails, a welding current at the time of starting is made to 240-280A and immediately after corners of four rounds of a final layer of the feet are deposited sufficiently, the current value is lowered to 190-240A to perform continuous welding. By this method, the size of an electrode joint or the final crater can be reduced and the crater cracking can be suppressed.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cast slab with excellent solidification structure in which an equiaxed crystal ratio in the solidified cast slab is enhanced by applying a stirring flow in molten steel by means of electromagnetic stirring to prevent occurrence of internal defects such as center segregation and center porosity and also generation of a negative segregation band in the inside of the cast slab, and improve hardness and wear resistance etc. of steel products, and to provide steel material made by processing the cast slab.
      SOLUTION: In continuous casting of the molten steel 12 containing not less than 0.15 mass% carbon for use as railroads or thick steel plates which is poured into a mold 11, electromagnetic stirring apparatus 16a and 16b are used to apply a stirring thrust to the molten steel with variations, so that a negative segregation band 20, which is formed when the molten steel 12 solidifies, is divided into a stripe shape with a thickness of 2.6-8.1 mm.
