    • A technique for improving lamination quality and for controlling NCA in an ink-jet printhead. With respect to lamination quality, printhead regions are identified where it is desirable to improve planarity or to reduce the likelihood of corner lift or barrier/orifice plate delamination. Planarization is accomplished by the insertion of a suitably configured composition of gold, metal-2 or metal-3 into an identified region in the thin film substrate, thereby eliminating substantially delamination between ink barrier layer and substrate. Substantial NCA control is achieved when a similarly configured composition is inserted into the thin film substrate to achieve planarization in the printhead region near the ink drop generators.

    • A TAB circuit particularly suited for an ink jet pen and method of manufacture. A TAB circuit is presented which incorporates a central isolation area within the TAB circuit and an ESD protective ring which surrounds the TAB circuit. To facilitate plating, all of the active TAB traces are shorted together by individual plating interconnects located generally within the central isolation area. These interconnects are arranged in a staggered pattern such that sufficient clearance is available to punch out the interconnects without damaging an adjacent trace. The central isolation area is positioned between the TAB circuit window and the terminal pads. When the TAB circuit is mounted on an ink jet pen, the central isolation area is in a "wrap area" of the pen so no additional TAB circuit area is required over what is needed to properly position the TAB circuit on the pen. In addition, since the isolation area is located above an area of the pen housing that is provided with an insulation layer, the risk of the punched traces shorting to the pen housing is eliminated.

    • In a print cartridge according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, a polymer tape having orifices formed therein and containing conductive traces has a substrate containing heater elements affixed to a back surface of the tape. Each of the heater elements in the substrate is located substantially behind each of the orifices. The edges of the nozzle member overlap the edges of the substrate, and the back surface of the tape is sealed with respect to an ink reservoir so that a seal substantially circumscribes the substrate. This allows ink to flow around the side edges of the substrate and into vaporization chambers associated with each orifice. The conductive traces on the tape are attached to electrodes along the shorter side edges of the substrate so as not to interfere with the edge-feed of ink along the longer edges of the substrate. A demultiplexer on the substrate requires relatively few electrodes to be formed on the substrate for supplying energization signals to the numerous heater elements formed on the substrate.

    • Described is an ink delivery system for an inkjet printing system including a housing; a printhead fixed to the housing for ejecting droplets of ink on media; a regulator located within the housing; a source of ink for replenishing the printhead; and an ink passageway for connecting the source of ink and the valve inlet. The regulator including a valve having an inlet and outlet, with the outlet in fluid communication with the printhead; a flexible member within the print cartridge, the flexible member has a reference surface and an ink surface, the reference surface is in communication with an outside atmosphere, the ink surface is in fluid communication with the printhead, the difference in pressure between the outside atmosphere and the printhead causes the flexible member to bias toward the ink surface; and an actuator that is receives a force from the ink surface of the flexible member, the actuator actuates the valve based upon the differential pressure between the reference surface and the outside atmosphere. Also described is a fluidic coupling that releasably and fluidically connects to the inlet port of a print cartridge. The fluidic coupling acts as a seal for the print cartridge and a means of lubricating and protecting the inlet port from drying, leaking ink, and air ingestion while the print cartridge is in transit and in storage. The fluidic coupling also provides an auxiliary ink reservoir for the print cartridge. The fluidic coupling further provides an ink conduit to the printhead from an external ink supply.
