    • A fuel injection pump having a rotor with a distributor rotor at its outer end and an annular arrangement of radial pumping plunger bores providing a pumping chamber at its inner end. The pump rotor has a coaxial throughbore providing a valve bore intersecting the annular arrangement of plunger bores. A poppet valve, axially shiftable in the valve bore, has a sealing head engageable with a valve seat at the inner end of the rotor throughbore. An armature of a valve electromagnet is fixed to the outer end of the poppet valve for attraction by a coaxial stator when the electromagnet is energized. The poppet valve and armature are coupled to the pump rotor for rotation therewith. A coaxial accumulator bore is provided in a drive shaft adjacent the inner end of the rotor throughbore for supplying fuel to and receiving spilled fuel from the pumping chamber. A shaft driven transfer pump supplies fuel via an annulus in the distributor head to a chamber at the outer end of the rotor and then via the rotor throughbore and a coaxial bore in the poppet valve to the accumulator bore. A pressure regulator is connected between the accumulator bore and transfer pump inlet.

    • A rotary fuel injection pump (10) having a rotating spill control valve (37) mounted transversely in the rotor (16), adjacent the charge pump (39). The valve is centered on the longitudinal axis of the rotor and connected to the center of the pumping chamber by a short pump passage (43). Pressurized fuel from the pumping chamber is forced through the pump passage and a transverse bore (170) in the center of the spill valve, into an outlet passage (46) for delivery to the outlet nozzle. The forces on the valve are balanced during this injection event. Inlet fuel enters the valve bore and passes through the spill valve through another transverse bore (171), which is fluidly connected to the pump passage. A simplified spill pressure regulating valve (139, 141) and a dual piston cam ring timing adjustment arrangement (326, 328) are also disclosed.

    • A disposable safety scalpel comprises a handle and a blade carrier, which fit together such that the blade carrier can shift between a retracted position whereby a front portion of the handle covers or otherwise blocks contact with the sharp edge of the blade, and an extended position whereby the sharp edge of the blade protrudes beyond the handle. The handle has a substantially flat base portion that can be held by the forefinger of the surgeon for shifting of the carrier with the thumb between retracted and extended positions. When the carrier and blade are extended, the surgeon can hold only the base of the handle between the thumb and forefinger for cutting during surgery. The shifting between the retracted and deployed positions with only the fingers of one hand can be readily accomplished even in the presence of slippery fluids during surgery.

    • A piston in a syringe barrel has a cavity that opens toward the distal end of the barrel. A needle assembly has a hub, a hollow needle fixed in the hub, and a spring seated between the distal end of the barrel and the hub. A membrane is between the hub and the opening of the piston. A locking member is lodged between the barrel and the needle assembly, holding the needle assembly within the barrel to compress the spring. The piston is displaceable through functional positions in which the piston (a) forces serum out through the needle, (b) urges the membrane against the hub, and (c) dislodges the locking member thereby releasing the needle assembly such that the spring displaces the hub and at least a portion of the membrane into the cavity and withdraws the needle tip into the distal end of the barrel.
