    • A torch ignition internal combustion engine has a main combustion chamber for the combustion of a lean air-fuel mixture and an auxiliary combustion chamber for the combustion of a rich air-fuel mixture. The auxiliary combustion chamber has a suction and a discharge apertures open to the main combustion chamber. The suction aperture is located near to a valve seat for an intake valve so that the auxiliary combustion chamber is communicated with an intake port through the suction aperture and a part of the main combustion chamber when the intake valve is opened. The intake port is connected at its upstream end to an air intake pipe. A fuel injection nozzle extends into the intake port and is positioned such that a straight line between a fuel discharge orifice of the nozzle and a point of the valve seat nearest to the suction aperture is included in the jet of fuel discharged from the nozzle, so that a substantial part of the fuel injection from the nozzle during an intake stroke is directed toward the suction aperture of the auxiliary combustion chamber to thereby facilitate introduction of the rich air-fuel mixture thereinto. The fuel is discharged from the nozzle continuously throughout all of the strokes of each cycle of engine operation, so that the fuel discharged during the strokes except the intake stroke is retained and properly vaporized within the intake port and mixed with air to produce an air-fuel mixture which is introduced into the main combustion chamber together with fresh air from the air intake pipe forming a lean air-fuel mixture when the intake valve is opened, whereby an improved stratified charge is provided.

    • A torch ignition type internal combustion engine has a trap chamber comprising a cup-shaped member of a heat-resistant metal mounted on a cylinder head of the engine. The member has a substantially closed end protruding into a main combustion chamber and suction and discharge apertures through which the trap chamber always communicates with the main combustion chamber. A single intake port is provided in the cylinder head for supplying air-fuel mixture charges to both the main combustion chamber and trap chamber. The suction aperture is positioned adjacent to the back face of the valve head when it is in the open position so that a part of the air-fuel mixture from the single intake port flowing over the back face of the valve head is introduced through the suction aperture into the trap chamber on the intake stroke and ignited on the combustion stroke by a spark plug to provide torch jets which run through the suction and discharge apertures into the main combustion chamber, whereby a torch-ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the main combustion chamber is achieved by a simplified engine construction.

    • The invention disclosed is an internal combustion engine of the type having a main combustion chamber for combustion of the lean mixture; a trap chamber for trapping therein the rich mixture; a spark plug for igniting the rich mixture in the trap chamber; and a fuel injection system including a first fuel injection nozzle opening at an intake passage to each cylinder for injecting the fuel toward the trap chamber during the suction stroke, a second fuel injection nozzle opening at a throttle body or an intake manifold for injecting the fuel during any one of strokes, and a fuel injection control device for controlling the injection timing and period of the first and second fuel injection nozzles. The positive and complete stratified combustion of the mixture, in which the fuel has been satisfactorily vaporized, may be ensured not only at during starting and during warming-up or during operation in cold weather but also under any other operating conditions without resulting in a slow engine response during the transition period and an undesirable non-uniform distribution of the mixture.

    • A stratified internal combustion engine has a trap chamber for a rich mixture having suction and discharge apertures communicating the trap chamber with the main combustion chamber. A separating wall is provided between the suction and discharge apertures and also a fuel injection nozzle is arranged, as a means to trap the rich mixture in said trap chamber, for supplying fuel to said suction aperture by discharging the fuel at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure when an intake valve is opened, for thereby facilitating the introduction of the rich mixture into the trap chamber and scavenging the residual gases in the trap chamber and improving the trapping effect of the trap chamber with a resultant improvement in stratified combustion in the engine.

    • A torch ignition type internal combustion engine has a main combustion chamber and a trap chamber having torch apertures through which both chambers are communicated with each other. The apertures are positioned such that, when the main chamber is supplied with a charge of an air-fuel mixture from an intake port on an intake stroke, a part of the mixture charge is introduced through one of the apertures into the trap chamber and the residual gases remaining therein are simultaneously discharged from the trap chamber into the main chamber through the other aperture. The trap chamber has a substantially smoothly continuous inner surface to which the one aperture is tangential so that the introduction of air-fuel mixture therethrough into the trap chamber produces therein a vortex flow which facilitates scavenging of the trap chamber. A part of the mixture charge to the main chamber is also introduced into the trap chamber through both apertures on a succeeding compression stroke and also causes a vortex in the trap chamber, which assures uniform mixing of the fresh air-fuel mixture therein and any residual gases, if any, therein to thereby facilitate improved spark-ignition of the mixture and strong torch jets.

    • A method of operating a torch ignition type internal combustion engine having a main combustion chamber and a trap chamber always communicated therewith through first and second apertures provided in the trap chamber has the steps of supplying a charge of a lean air-fuel mixture into the main combustion chamber through an intake port and introducing another charge of a rich air-fuel mixture through the first aperture into the trap chamber. The rich air-fuel mixture charge is substituted in the trap chamber for residual gases produced therein during the preceding combustion stroke to discharge the residual gases through the second aperture whereby the trap chamber is scavenged. A substantial part of the rich air-fuel mixture charge is retained in the trap chamber during a compression stroke and then ignited to produce therein a combustion flame which is then caused to spurt as torch jets through the first and second apertures into the main combustion chamber to ignite and burn the lean air-fuel mixture charge therein for thereby producing power in the main combustion chamber. The lean air-fuel mixture charge is too lean to be ignitable by spark-ignition while the rich air-fuel mixture charge is relatively rich. The mean air-fuel ratio of the total of the rich and lean air-fuel mixture charges is much leaner than the air-fuel ratio for conventional spark-ignition type internal combustion engines, whereby the invention greatly reduces the harmful components of engine exhaust gas.

    • A stratified internal combustion engine has a main combustion chamber for receiving a lean air-fuel mixture, a trap chamber for receiving a rich air-fuel mixture, a primary intake port for supplying the lean air-fuel mixture to the main combustion chamber, a secondary intake port for supplying the rich air-fuel mixture to the trap chamber and a partition between the primary and secondary intake ports.
