    • Process for the polymerization of ethylene or of ethylene with further 1-olefins, in which the ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst in a gas-phase reactor and reaction gas comprising propane and unpolymerized ethylene is circulated to remove the heat of polymerization, wherein the polymer particles are discharged continuously or discontinuously from the reactor, the polymer particles are separated from the major part of the concomitantly discharged gas and the polymer particles are degassed, the gas is freed of entrained fine particles and is separated from a low-boiling fraction comprising ethylene or from a high boiling fraction containing further 1-olefins or alkanes having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms in a first separation stage, a propane fraction is separated off in a second separation stage and this propane fraction is used for degassing the polymer particles discharged from the reactor, with the proportion of ethylene in the propane fraction being less than 1 mol % and the proportion of 1-olefins and alkanes having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the propane fraction being less than 4 mol %, in each case based on the total propane fraction. Furthermore, an apparatus for carrying out the process. In this way, a high heat discharge from the reactor, satisfactory degassing of the discharged polymer particles and recovery of the reaction gas discharged together with the polymer particles and also the gas used for degassing the polymer particles are made possible.

    • A transition metal catalyst component (1) for Ziegler catalyst systems is prepared by (1.1) first combining (1.1.1) an inorganic oxidic substance (I), as the carrier, with (1.1.2) a solution (II) consisting of (IIa) an organic solvent and (IIb) a transition metal composition to form a suspension (III), evaporating down this suspension to form a solid-phase intermediate (IV) and (1.2) then combining (1.2.1) the solid-phase intermediate (IV) obtained from (1.1) with (1.2.2) a solution of an organoaluminum compound (V) to form a suspension, the resulting suspended solid-phase products (VI) being the transition metal catalyst component (1).The characteristic feature is that the solution (II) employed in stage (1.1) consists of (IIa) a certain oxahydrocarbon and (IIb) a mixture of (IIb1) a vanadium trichloride/alcohol complex, (IIb2) a titanium trihalide and (IIb3) a zirconium tetrahalide.

    • An apparatus for the polymerization of olefins, in particular ethylene, comprising a gas-phase fluidized-bed reactor (1), a recycle gas line (2) connected to the reactor for discharging and recirculating the recycle gas stream comprising the unpolymerized olefin and a cyclone (3) located in the recycle gas line for the reduction and precipitation of the solid particles entrained in the recycle gas from the reactor, with the cyclone comprising an upper section (3a) which has an essentially vertical central axis, whose wall extends along a rotationally symmetric body and which is provided with a cyclone inlet (4) arranged eccentrically relative to the central axis, a middle section (3b) which adjoins the upper section (3a) and whose wall extends along a rotationally symmetric body which tapers in a downward direction, a lower section (3c) for discharging the solid particles precipitated from the recycle gas which adjoins the middle section (3b) and whose wall extends along a rotationally symmetric body and a tube (5) extending essentially axially symmetrically down into the upper section and, if appropriate, the middle section for discharging the recycle gas which has been freed of the particles. According to the invention the ratio Hi of the distance hi from the lower end of the tube (5) extending downward into the cyclone to the intersection (6) of an imaginary extension of the wall of the downward-extending tube (5) with the wall of the middle section (3b) to the diameter di of the downward-extending tube (5) is from 3 to 8, in particular from 4 to 7.
