摘要： This invention is a data storage system that includes logic configured for carrying out a method to allow a so-called “re-labeling” of a logical volume. Re-labeling changes the label configuration originally put in place by the host at a first device and replicated to a second device. The re-labeling takes place during a certain operation that takes the second device offline to a host computer in communication with the data storage system. This re-labeling avoids labeling conflicts that could arise when duplicate labels result on two different devices as a result of the replication.

摘要： Providing access to a host for requested data in a data storage array includes transferring the requested data from a cache memory of the data storage array to either the host or a host adaptor if the requested data is in the cache memory, transferring the requested data from a relatively slow non-volatile memory of the data storage array to the cache memory and subsequently transferring the requested data from the cache memory to either the host or the host adaptor if the requested data is in the relatively slow non-volatile memory and transferring the requested data simultaneously to the cache and to either the host and the host adaptor if the requested data is stored in relatively fast non-volatile memory. Data may be transferred directly from the relatively fast non-volatile memory to the host. The relatively fast non-volatile memory may be controlled by the host adaptor.

摘要： For a data copying operation, data compression using constant number-of-track-groups and a thinly provisioned target device facilitates incremental updates where the size of the compressed data on the target device changes. Compressed data is written to the same LBA as the beginning of the source device chunk cluster LBA (1:1 mapping of data start). A termination string or other demarking device is used to identify space freed on the target device resulting from compression. During an incremental update only changed chunk clusters are changed, and freed space is changed accordingly if necessary.

The directors may be interconnected by an interconnect fabric. The first one of the directors may provide a request to the second one of the directors via the interconnect fabric. Determining which of the plurality of directors contains metadata correspond to the particular logical device may include using a lookup table.
