摘要： Digital video data encoder and decoder operate to enable the low and high speed reproduction of variable rate encoded digital video data by reproducing and decoding intraframe encoded frames that are identified by previously reproduced intraframe encoded frames. In the encoder, digital video data is riable rate encoded (1), for example, intraframe and interframe encoded, entry points (i.e., beginning positions) of selected encoded video data are identified and which represent video frames that occur at predetermined intervals of time (e.g., 1, 2 and 4 seconds) in the video picture. Entry point data that identify these positions are generated (31, 8, 33) and added (32, 6) to the encoded video data before the video data is recorded on the record medium (DSM). When the encoded data is reproduced from the record medium, the entry point data is extracted therefrom and stored, and a successive intraframe encoded frame identified by the extracted entry point data is reproduced and decoded. The invention further provides for a record medium having thereon the encoded digital video data, and also provides for an encoder and corresponding decoder which encode and decode, respectively, digital still image and audio data in which entry points refer to each of the still images and also to particular intervals of time of the audio data.

摘要： A ROM constituting a variable length coding table of 2 picture element range is provided. A motion vector within the range of 2 picture elements is given to the ROM to provide a VLC code corresponding to the motion vector within the range of 2 picture elements. In a calculation circuit, assuming that the value of a motion vector within the range of 4 picture elements is X, a quotient Y and a remainder Z are obtained by the division of X by 2. The quotient Y is supplied to the ROM whose output is added the remainder Z at an additional circuit to obtain a VLC code corresponding to the motion vector lying within the range of 4 picture elements. This is equivalent to the coding at the variable length coding for four-picture element range. By sending a flag indicating whether a motion vector range is 2 picture elements or 4 picture elements, the motion vector is correctly reproduced from the VLC code. By the use of the single table ROM, a motion vector within the range of 2 picture elements and 4 picture elements can be coded to reduce the load imposed on the hardware.

An apparatus for reproducing a video signal recorded on a recording medium (7, 8) includes a system for reproducing (40) the video signal from the recording medium (7, 8), and a circuit (50) for extracting from the reproduced video signal a flag signal indicating a display scanning mode for the video signal. Each layer on a multi-layered disk may include an inside guard area 2, program area 3, and outer guard area 5 which are located in uniform radial positions in all layers. The uppermost layer has the recording direction from the inner side to the outer side of the disk, and the next layer has the recording direction from the outer side to the inner side of the disk such that opposite recording directions appear alternately. The radial position of the recording terminal end on the uppermost first layer may coincide with the radial position of the start of record on the next second layer. Recording and/or playback apparatus for such recording media is also provided.

摘要： In an encoder (1, 2; Fig. 1), an input picture of a non-interlace structure is sampled by down sampling to form an interlace picture,and the interlace picture is encoded. The encoded data are decoded to form an interlace decoded picture, and the interlace decoded picture is sampled by up sampling and utilized as a predictive picture upon encoding of the non-interlace input picture. In a decoder (7, 4; Fig. 2), a bit stream corresponding to an interlace picture of a low resolution is decoded into an interlace decoded picture. The interlace decoded picture is sampled by up sampling and is utilized as a predictive picture upon decoding of a bit stream corresponding to a non-interlace picture of a high resolution.

摘要： Encoded data is reversely reproduced by decoding each picture only once and using only as many frame memory sections as are needed in a normal playback operation. A picture header detector (34) detects a picture header from data read out from a video code buffer (10) to identify the type of picture. The picture type information controls a picture data selecting circuit (35) for selecting frames of I and P pictures equal in number to the number of frame memory sections in a frame memory bank (16). The selected frames are supplied to an inverse VLC circuit (11) to be decoded, starting at the head of a GOP with an I picture. The decoded I and P pictures are stored in the frame memory bank (16) and transmitted to a display unit (18), starting with the temporally most recent picture and reading backward.

A track jump judging circuit (47) produces, when the amount of data stored in the ring buffer memory (45) reaches a predetermined value set in advance, a track jumping instruction to cause the pickup (41) to perform track jumping back by one track distance.
