    • A color cathode-ray tube apparatus has a compensation mechanism for generating a magnetic field that compensates a change in a horizontal-deflection magnetic field due to a change in the temperature of horizontal-deflection coils. The compensation mechanism is formed of auxiliary coils to which a current is supplied in synchronism with horizontal deflection of electron beams, and a control element for controlling the current supplied to the auxiliary coils in accordance with a change in the temperature of the horizontal-deflection coils.

    • A novel lactone-modified diol useful as a soft segment component which provides a thermoplastic elastomer showing excellent performances in elastic recovery and low-temperature properties is provided. This lactone-modified diol is represented by the general formula:OH--Y.O.CO.O).sub.p (A--O).sub.l (B--O).sub.m (CO.Y.O).sub.q Hwherein Y is a bivalent residue derived by removing the ester bond from a 6- to 8-carbon saturated aliphatic lactone ring, p and q are positive numbers determined from the amount of a saturated aliphatic lactone to be reacted and p+q.gtoreq.1, A represents ##STR1## B represents --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, and l and m are positive numbers satisfying the relationships: l+m=about 6 to 140 and l/m=10/90 to 100/0 (molar ratio),and is obtained by reacting 1 mol of a polyalkylene ether diol of the general formula:HO--A--O).sub.l (B--O).sub.m Hwith at least one mol of a 6- to 8-carbon saturated aliphatic lactone.

    • A mode switching mechanism comprises a driving toothed wheel driven by a motor, a driven wheel having first and second coaxially mounted cams for rotation therewith, a toothed circumferential portion for providing meshing contact with the driving wheel and a toothless circumferential portion for providing out of meshing contact with the driving wheel. The driven wheel is normally urged so that it comes into meshing contact with the driving wheel. A spring-biased rotatable trigger lever is arranged to lock the driven wheel in a position out of meshing contact with the driving wheel and unlock it in response to the operation of any one of tape operating mode keys to establish the meshing contact to thereby allow the driven wheel to be rotated by the driving wheel. A a first cam follower is movable to a recording/playback position by camming contact with the second cam in response to the operation of one of the recording and playback mode keys, and a second cam follower is movable to a rewind/fast-forward position by camming contact with the second cam in response to the operation of one of the rewind and fast-forward mode keys.
