    • 24,693. Smith, M. Nov. 29. Bronzing.-In a bronzing-machine, the cards, sheets of paper, or the like are conveyed by a reciprocating table B from a feed-table beneath the bronzing rollers, pads, &c. J and thence to a delivery table. The reciprocating table may be operated in any suitable manner but, preferably, from a rotary crank C through linkages D, E, G, H. At the lifting of the front stops L on the feed-table, the grippers M seize the sheet and carry it forward, while, at the end of the stroke, the grippers N hold the sheet and, after the table has retreated, drop it on the pile O. During the return stroke of the table, the rollers J are preferably lifted out of contact with it by means of pillars P, reciprocated by the action of eccentrics or cams Q, or, instead, the rollers J are stationary and the table is depressed. B r o n z e powder is largely prevented from escaping from the machine by providing a casing W, and this may be connected to a fan 1 by means of which air is withdrawn from the casing and discharged into a receptacle. The air carries with it the powder. This air and powder may be discharged into a separator 3, the powder falling into the opening T, whence it is fed into the casing by means of a roller U. According to the Provisional Specification, the grippers for taking off the sheet &c. from the table may continue to pull the sheet under the rollers if it has net passed them; also, a band, endless table, or equivalent with a gripping-device may be substituted for the reciprocating table.

    • 9164. Smith, M. May 2. Glueing.-Paper covers for books are fed on a cylinder between travelling tapes into contact with a glueing, gumming, or pasting wheel which applies a strip of adhesive ; thence they pass under the book, which is pressed against the cover, and the complete book is delivered on to a table. The books to be covered are stored on an inclined table with an adjustable edge L, which projects on a level with the upper surface of the sliding plate P. The covers are fed by hand or mechanically from a table A to the grippers on the cylinder B, over which they pass between two sets of tapes C, D to the glueing-wheel E, which is opposite a groove to prevent the application of glue to the surface of the cylinder B. The covers pass up to an adjustable stop G. The foremost book is then pushed by the plate N on the plate J down on to the cover against the bar O, and is gripped by the forward movement of the plate P. The bar O is moved upwards to press the cover and book close together, and then forwards to allow the book to be passed downwards, drawing the cover away from the tapes, which are supported by the parts R, 0 to prevent distortion. A well-known deliverydevice consisting of sliding rods S and a ribbed plate T delivers the book on to a table. The various parts of the machine are cam-driven from a shaft V through levers and springs, the sliding parts J, S being moved through toothed quadrants and racks.
