    • Described is a system and method including a user interface to manage sets of digital data (e.g., files) such as digital photographs or email messages. The system and method comprise a rapid sort mechanism and an underlying support mechanism that associates metadata with each set of digital data, including annotation metadata obtained from the sort mechanism. As the user scrolls through images that represent the sets of digital data and categorizes them, metadata as to its particular categorization or lack of categorization is implicitly obtained and associated with each set of digital data. Grouping of sets of digital data into clusters is also provided, with a visual indication as to which cluster a set of digital data belongs. With respect to digital photography, the system and method makes annotating and classifying digital photographs significantly easier and faster than contemporary photograph management mechanisms.

    • A system for organizing images includes an extraction component that extracts visual information (e.g., faces, scenes, etc.) from the images. The extracted visual information is provided to a comparison component which computes similarity confidence data between the extracted visual information. The similarity confidence data is an indication of the likelihood that items of extracted visual information are similar. The comparison component then generates a visual distribution of the extracted visual information based upon the similarity confidence data. The visual distribution can include groupings of the extracted visual information based on computed similarity confidence data. For example, the visual distribution can be a two-dimensional layout of faces organized based on the computed similarity confidence data—with faces in closer proximity faces computed to have a greater probability of representing the same person. The visual distribution can then be utilized by a user to sort, organize and/or tag images.

    • A display table contains a projector that can either project an image onto a display surface of the display table or onto an external surface that is separate from the display table. A user can change the path of the light from the projector from the display surface to the external surface, either by rotating the projector to an appropriate position, or by moving a mirror into the path of light from the projector. A video camera included in the display table also has dual functionality and can selectively be used either to image objects on or above the display surface, or objects that are not adjacent to the display surface. A panel in the housing of the table is opened, and either the video camera is pivoted or a mirror is moved into its light path. Imaging a user with the video camera is useful for video conferencing.

    • A database of objects is distributed between a server computer and multiple client computers as an object oriented virtual world environment (VWE) with multimedia presentation features. A primary database is maintained on the server and includes at least one entry for each object disposed within the VWE. In one implementation a presentation virtual world environment has a multi-user virtual presentation room object (ShowRoom) in which presentation or information element objects (ShowItems) are presented from a server to multiple viewers at multiple client computers. The presentation room object and presentation element objects are global objects in that they are provided from server to client computers as part of a presentation VWE. The presentation element objects provide a model representing a presentation in the presentation VWE. Interface objects at the client computers provide a view of the presentation, with user interface and control elements, which view is separate from the model provided by the presentation element objects.
