    • A waterborne thermoset cured anticorrosion formulation includes a water dispersed or emulsified phosphonated or water dispersed or emulsified sulfonated epoxy resin that is cured with a phenoxy resin having a polyhydroxyl ether backbone and terminal alpha glycol moieties. Water is present as a predominant volatile in which the epoxy resin and phenoxy resin are present in a weight ratio of epoxy resin to phenoxy resin of between 0.1 and 3:1. An aqueous curative is provided to induce cure between the epoxy resin and phenoxy resin, A corrosion inhibiting metal salt is also present having a salt anion of phosphate, biphosphate or tetraborate and a metal cation with the proviso that the metal cation formulation as a whole is devoid of chromium, lead, cobalt, and cadmium. Ideal curatives include aqueous aminoplast crosslinkers, aqueous unblocked isocyanates, aqueous blocked isocyanates, and a mixture thereof. With the inclusion of electrically conductive aluminum or zinc particulate the formulation is rendered corrosion resistant as well as electrically conductive to make an inventive coating amenable to powder coating.

    • A coil coating composition producing a coil coating with excellent properties at a lower peak metal temperature includes (a) a first, branched polyester with an hydroxyl number of at least about 80 mg KOH/g, (b) a second, essentially linear polyester with an hydroxyl number of at least about 44 mg KOH/g, and (c) a crosslinking agent. The branched polyester is prepared by condensation of a polyol component consisting essentially of a flexibilizing diol, a branched diol, and, optionally, a polyol having at least three hydroxyl groups and a polyacid component consisting essentially of one or more aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids and polymerizable anhydrides and esters thereof and, optionally, a polyacid having at least three carboxylic acid groups or poymerizable anhydrides or esters thereof, wherein at least one of the polyol having at least three hydroxyl groups and the polyacid having at least three carboxyl groups or an anhydride or methyl ester thereof is included. The essentially linear polyester is prepared by condensation of a polyol component consisting essentially of a flexibilizing diol and a branched diol and a polyacid component consisting essentially of one or more aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids and polymerizable anhydrides and esters thereof. The branched diols of the first and second polyesters are independently selected from the group consisting of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol, 2-ethyl-2-butyl-1,3-propanediol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, and combinations thereof.

    • A polyester composition has a number average molecular weight M.sub.n of between about 500 and about 1000, a weight average molecular weight M.sub.w of between about 600 and about 2000, a polydispersity below about 2, preferably below about 1.8, hydroxyl functionality between 2 and 3, a hydroxyl value of between about 160 and about 260, and an acid number below about 10. Less than about 5% of the OH groups of the polyester are pendent, the rest being terminal. Between about 10 and about 50 wt % of the monomers used to form the polyester composition are anhydrides having the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is a non-aromatic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chain having between 6 and 30 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a non-aromatic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon having between 1 and 8 carbon atoms, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have, in total, between 8 and 30 carbon atoms. The polyester in conjunction with a hydroxyl-reactive curative provides a coating composition.

    • The polyester composition of this invention comprises a polyester oligomer having a number average molecular weight of from about 650 to about 950, a weight average molecular weight of from about 950 to about 1900, and a polydispersity of from about 1.45 to about 2. The hydroxyl value is from about 150 to about 275, and the acid number is less than about 7. Substantially all of the hydroxy groups are primary and from 0 to about 5% of the hydroxy groups are present as pendant hydroxy-alkyl groups. The polyester is formed by a two-stage reaction of monomers consisting of carboxylic anhydrides having from 4 to 34 carbon atoms and polyols having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms. From about 10 to about 50% by weight of the monomers are anhydrides having the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is a non-aromatic hydrocarbon radical having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The total number of carbon atoms in R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is from 8 to 30 carbon atoms. The polyester in conjunction with a hydroxyl-reactive curative provides a coating composition.

    • An essentially linear polyester oligomer having hydroxyl and carboxyl terminal groups for subsequent cure and its production are disclosed. This polyester oligomer is produced by first adducting approximately equimolar amounts of diol carrying two primary hydroxyl groups and a dicarboxylic acid anhydride to form an hydroxy acid. The carboxyl groups of this hydroxy acid are then esterified by reaction with an approximately stoichiometric proportion of diol carrying one primary hydroxyl group and one secondary hydroxyl group, the stoichiometry being based on the total hydroxyl content of the diol and the carboxyl content of the hydroxy acid, to form an hydroxyl-terminated oligomer. This hydroxyl-terminated oligomer is then adducted with a polycarboxylic acid monoanhydride having a carboxyl functionality of at least 3, this monoanhydride being used in an amount of 0.01 to 0.15 equivalents of anhydride per hydroxyl equivalent in the hydroxyl-terminated oligomer. The resulting polyester oligomer is essentially linear and possesses low solution viscosity at high resin solids content combined with high reactivity enabling low temperature cure with aminoplast resins.
