    • A run length which is the length of a run representing continuous black pixels is calculated on the basis of binary image data, and an extending process is performed for the run using a target pixel as an object to generate an extended run. An extended run length representing the length of the extended run and a maximum run length representing the length of the longest run in the range of the extended run are calculated. If a difference between the extended run length and the maximum run length is smaller than a predetermined value, an image near the target pixel is determined as a character image. If the difference is equal to or larger than the predetermined value, the image is determined as a half-tone image. In this manner, accuracy in separation between the half-tone area and the character area in a document image can be improved.

    • A multi-function image processing apparatus includes a system control unit that receives an image processing job sent over a network by a requesting device, and that controls operation of the image processing apparatus. The apparatus includes an image recording unit that performs a printing operation. The apparatus also includes a scanner that scans data provided to the apparatus. The apparatus further includes an image processing unit that receives scan data from the scanner, that performs image processing on the scan data, and that outputs image-processed scan data to the image recording unit for printing of the image-processed scan data. The apparatus also includes an interface unit that transfers image data between the image processing unit and the system control unit in at least one mode of operation of the image processing apparatus. The image processing unit includes a first FIFO and a second FIFO for bypassing the interface unit under certain situations.

    • A system and a method for providing characteristic data associated with a scanned document is provided. The characteristic data of the document may include a title, a creation date, a scan date, an author, a subject matter, a total page count, a starting page number, an ending page number, a color type, a document type, a language, and/or a document direction. The method includes analyzing a bitmapped image file of a document, determining at least one characteristic data of the document based on the analysis of the bitmapped image file, and linking the characteristic data to the bitmapped image file, wherein the characteristic data is useable by a document management system to identify the document in a search. Analyzing the bitmapped image of the document may include a natural language analysis technique, an optical character recognition analysis technique, an image layout analysis technique, and/or a color analysis technique.
