    • An electrical machine component monitoring system 100 includes a light source 101 that provides an optical signal through a fibre optic cable 107 and a fibre optic sensing component 106 positioned on or at a standoff distance from the electrical machine component 109 to obtain a condition responsive optical signal wrt grease, particles, oil and/or dust/dirt contamination on stator end windings. The system further includes a photo detector 104 to receive the responsive optical signal from the fibre optic sensing component 106 and to convert the responsive optical signal to an electrical signal. A processing circuitry 105 is also provided in the system for determining information regarding dirt on the electrical machine component 109 by analyzing the electrical signal. The optical sensing component comprising a fibre grating sensing module including short (FBG) and long (LPG) period Bragg gratings and a central fibre core of germanium dioxide or fluorine co-doped silica (fig 2 not shown) is described. Alternatively standoff fibre sensing probes 180,200,220 may optically monitor the component 184 using reflected light from representative contamination on the windows 190,210,230. Lenses 208, 228 may be incorporated. This arrangement also detects loosening of end windings.
