    • A method for preparing octa-2,7-dien-1-ol by means of a hydrodimerisation reaction between 1,3-butadiene and water in the presence of a transition metal in metal form or in the form of a compound of said metal, at least one phosphine and at least one nitrogen compound. The phosphine is selected from the substituted sulphonated arylphosphines of formula (I), the nitrogen compound is selected from a tertiary amine and a quaternary ammonium salt of formula (II) or (III), and the reaction is carried out in the presence of carbon dioxide. In said formulae, R is CH3 or C2H5, M is an alkali metal or a quaternary ammonium group, x is 0, 1 or 2, and each of Rp, Rq and, if applicable, Rs is independently CH3 or C2H5, while Rr is C6-22 alkyl and X is a counter-anion.
