摘要： A system is provided in which locally-generated graphics may be displayed on a user's equipment. The user's equipment may be based on a set-top box and television or other user television equipment, a personal computer or handheld computing device or other user computer equipment, or a cellular telephone with a display or other user telephone equipment. The locally-generated graphics may be displayed as an overlay on top of video or as wrap-around graphics on the same screen as a reduced-size video window. The video and the graphics may be related to wagering and in particular may be related to horse racing. The user may interactively wager on horse races with the user equipment.

摘要： In a paging system, a central paging station determines a preferred amount of time, or "sleep value," that a paging device is to be inactive during a paging cycle based upon the volume of page messages that paging device historically receives during given time periods. After determining a preferred sleep value, the central paging station creates and transmits a wake-up interval page message. The paging device receives the wake-up interval page message and changes its wake-up interval to correspond to the one contained in the received page message.

摘要： A two-way communication system for communication betweeen a system network and a mobile unit. The system network includes a plurality of base transmitters and base receivers include in the network. The base transmitters are divided into zonal assignments and broadcast in simulcast using multi-carrier modulation techniques. The system network controls the base transmitters to broadcast in suimulcast during both systemwide and zone boundaries to maximize information throughout. The preferred mobile unit inlcudes a noise detector circuit to prevent unwanted transmissions. The system network further provides an adaptive registration feature for mobile units which controls the registration operation by the mobile units to maximize information throughout.

摘要： A system and method for encoding and decoding page messages includes an encoder for encoding and classifying each word of the page message. Words found in one of one or more word dictionaries are encoded into corresponding compressed codes. A header code identifying either the dictionary or the classification of the word is associated with each word. The encoded message is transmitted to a page receiver where each word is decoded based upon the header code associated therewith. If the header code indicates that the word is a compressed code stored in a word dictionary, the compressed code is used to retrieve the word from the dictionary. If the header code indicates that the word is not stored in a word dictionary, the words are decoded differently, depending upon their classification.
