    • An apparatus and method for patients requiring repositioning of misaligned teeth who typically undergo orthodontic treatment to move the teeth into corrected positions. The orthodontic methods typically require lengthy procedures involving the application of light forces to the teeth to effect movement as accomplished by braces or other appliances. The apparatus and method includes the administration of a needle corticotomy to select regions that have been identified as absent any landmarks to avoid. The method is accomplished without the use of freeze-dried and bovine bone and without a mucoperiosteal flap procedure, resulting in low medical risk and providing a simplified and less time consuming procedure as compared to the prior art, and furthermore wherein the method effects a significant reduction in the time required to complete an orthodontic case while also significantly reducing the discomfort and recovery time for the patient.

    • A database management system (1) comprises up to fifty or more workstations (2), each for a user. The environment may, for example, be a hospital and the system manages medical records in a secure manner. Each user has a private key issued by a KGC (5). A database controller (3) updates a secure database (3) with data and associated signatures generated by the user workstations (2). Thus every record of the secure database (3) has a signature to provide full traceability and non-repudiation of data edits/updates. It -is important for the system (1) that the signatures are verified on a regular basis, say every hour. Such a task would be extremely processor-intensive if the database (3) is large. However this is performed by a verification processor (4) of the system (1) in a much shorter time than heretofore, t1+n(&Dgr;), where t1 is the time for one verification, n is the number of signatures, and &Dgr; is a time value which is a very small proportion of t1 (less than 1%).

    • An interchangeable core and housing assembly comprising a cylinder housing (42) which has a central opening with an alignment bracket (44) in one part of its cross-section and an interchangeable core (60) in the remaining part. The interchangeable core comprises a cylinder body (61) with a central bore and a radial projection (62) which fits into a radial slot of the aligning bracket. The radial projection has a plurality of radial recesses containing a plurality of spring-loaded top driver pins (66). A cylinder plug (46) is a inserted into the central bore of the cylinder body. Cylinder plug has dimples (78 and 80) on its exterior, a keyway (82), and a plurality of radial recesses with bottom pins (67). Interchangeability of the core is achieved by providing an annular groove (55a and 55b) formed in the central opening of the cylinder housing and locking balls (84 and 85) installed into holes (70, 71, 72, and 73) of the cylinder body. The balls are moveable between a first position, in which the interchangeable core is locked in the cylinder housing, and a second position, in which the interchangeable core in unlocked from the cylinder housing and can be withdrawn therefrom. The interchangeable core can be unlocked and only when a control key (49), which had dimples (49c and 49b) sufficiently deep to put the locking balls flush with the outer surface of the cylinder body, is inserted and turned to a predetermined angle.

    • Gas sensors 1 are mounted on respective explosion proof housings 2 that contain microprocessor circuitry 11 for operating signals from the sensors. Signals from the circuitry 11 are transmitted along a digital highway 4 to a central control unit. The sensors may be located at remote locations in an industrial process plant or for example along the roof of a tunnel. A non-contact hand held unit 12 is provided for individually setting operating parameters of the circuitry 11, to enable factors such as zero set, span and linearity to be set for the sensors individually. A two way wireless communication link is provided between the unit 12 and a transducer 15 on the housing 1, so that the current value of the circuit operating parameters can be displayed on a display 18 on the hand held unit.
