摘要： A few mode optical fiber suitable for use in a mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical transmission system is disclosed. The optical fiber has a graded-index core with a radius R 1 in the range from 8 μm to 14 μm, an alpha value greater than or equal to about 2.3 and less than about 2.7 at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and a maximum relative refractive index Δ 1MAX from about 0.3% to about 0.6% relative to the cladding. The optical fiber also has an effective area greater than about 90 μm 2 and less than about 160 μm 2. The core and cladding support only the LP01 and LP11 modes at wavelengths greater than 1500 nm. The cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ 4MAX such that Δ 1MAX > Δ 4MAX , and the differential group delay between the LP01 and LP11 modes is less than about 0.5 ns/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm.

摘要： A method for producing an optical fiber is provided. The method includes the steps of drawing an optical fiber from a heated glass source in a furnace and introducing index perturbations to the optical fiber via a plurality of perturbation sources arranged at a plurality of different azimuthal locations. The index perturbations are introduced synchronously at different locations along the axial length of the fiber by the plurality of perturbation sources in a generally helical pattern on the outside surface of the fiber in one embodiment. According to another embodiment, the index perturbations are introduced by the plurality of perturbation sources at different frequencies.

The fiber includes a graded index glass core having a diameter in the range of 24 microns to 40 microns, and a graded index having an alpha profile with an alpha coefficient less than 2.12 and a maximum relative refractive index in the range between 0.6 percent and 1.9 percent. The optical fiber further includes a cladding surrounding and in contact with the core. The cladding includes a depressed-index annular portion. The fiber has an overfilled bandwidth greater than 2.0 GHz-km at 1310 nm. An optical backplane system is also provided. The optical backplane system includes at least one transceiver, at least one optical connector, and a plurality of multimode optical fibers as defined above coupled to the at least one optical connector.

摘要： A dispersion correction optical fiber (20) includes a segmented core (21) having a central core segment (22), a moat segment (24) and, preferably, a ring segment (26 ). The refractive index profile is selected to provide a total dispersion minimum which is located within an operating wavelength band (50) of the fiber (20). Most preferably, the dispersion value at the minimum(49) is more negative than -400 ps/nm/km and greater than -1200 ps/nm/km at 1550 nm. Optical transmission systems including the present invention dispersion correction optical fiber (20) optic ally coupled to various transmission fibers (36) and dispersion compensating fibers (18) are also disclosed, as is a method of operating the dispersion correction fiber(20) wherein the minimum (49) is located within the desired operating wavelength band (50).
