    • Investment-casting shells are disclosed that have at least one cluster of individual club-head casting molds for casting thin-walled, titanium alloy club-heads at high process yield and low material usage. The shells have respective combinations of cluster configuration and number, gating, and runners, as determined systematically. Some shell configurations include a cluster of at least ten casting molds for respective club-heads each (a) having a head-volume greater than 400 cm3, (b) defining at least one club-head wall having a thickness of less than 0.8 mm, and (c) defining at least one respective gate. The cluster is configured to produce a cast-ptoduct yield of greater than 80% at a material usage of less than 600 g, including process losses, per cast club-head. Also, at least one runner connects the gates together.

    • A golf club head in accordance with the invention includes a front wall defining a forward striking face having an engineered texture thereon. The engineered texture includes a prescribed, regular pattern of discrete, geometric shapes spaced at least 0.1 mm apart from each other, each shape having a volume that is less than 0.0007 mm3. Preferred methods of manufacturing the engineered texture of the forward striking face include treating the face by chemical etching, precision micro-saw-cutting, and laser cutting. The engineered texture enhances the performance of the golf club head upon striking a golf ball, providing one or more of an increased high backspin, a lower launch angle, and a higher balls speed, as compared to a golf club head not incorporating such an engineered texture.

    • Methods are disclosed for making composite face plates for club-heads of golf clubs. In an exemplary method a lay-up is formed having multiple prepreg layers, each including at least one layer of respective fibers at a respective orientation. The at least one fiber layer is impregnated with a resin. The lay-up is exposed to an initial tool temperature Ti and an initial pressure P1. At time t1 the resin has minimal viscosity, and the lay-up temperature and pressure are increased from Ti and Pi, respectively. During an interval from time t1 to time t2, the lay-up temperature and pressure are increased to Ts>Ti and P2>P1, respectively. During the first interval the resin experiences a relatively rapid progressive increase in viscosity. During a second interval between t2 and a later time t3, the lay-up is maintained substantially at Ts and substantially at P2, which allows the resin to experience a relatively slow progressive increase in viscosity to a specified pre-cure viscosity level.

    • The present disclosure pertains to composite articles, and in particular a composite face plate for a golf club-head, and methods for making the same. In certain embodiments, a composite face plate for a club-head is formed with a cross-sectional profile having a varying thickness. The face plate comprises a lay-up of multiple, composite prepreg plies. At least a portion of the plies comprise a plurality of elongated prepreg strips arranged in a predetermined criss-cross pattern in the lay-up. The prepreg strips create one or more areas of increased thickness where the strips overlap each other, thereby creating a desired profile for the plate. Metallic or polymer covers or cover layers can be used to define a striking surface.
