    • 1,154,816. Soluble aromatic polyether-amides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 12 Sept., 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 41589/67. Heading C3R. Soluble aromatic polyamides comprising recurrent units where Ar, Ar 1 and Ar 2 are bivalent radicals free from substituents capable of reacting with the amide group and in which the NH and O are linked to Ar 2 in the m or p positions, may be prepared by reacting the appropriate diamine and acid dihalide at - 30‹ to 100‹ C. in polar organic solvents. Several suitable diamines and acid dihalides are specified. Preferred solvents are N-alkyl pyrrolidones and N,N 1 -dialkyl carboxylic acid amides. With other polar solvents, such as tetramethylene sulphone, acid acceptors, e.g. t-amines or LiOH, are necessary. The polymer may be precipitated with a water-alcohol mixture. In examples polymers are prepared from various combinations of the acid chlorides of isophthalic, terephthalic and 4,41-diphenylsulphone dicarboxylic acids and the following diamines: 4,4 1 - di(p - aminophenoxy) - diphenyl, - diphenyl propane, - diphenylsulphone and - diphenyl ether; 4,4 1 - di(2 - chloro - 4- aminophenoxy)diphenylpropane; 1,4 - di(2- chloro - 4 - aminophenoxy)benzene; and 3- chloro - or 3,3 1 - dichloro - 4,4 1 - di(p - aminophenoxy)diphenyl sulphone. The products are colourless polyamides having melting or decomposition points from 300‹ to above 360‹ C. and intrinsic viscosities between 0À91 and 1À62.

    • 1422498 Polycaprolactam of modified dyability BAYER AG 5 March 1974 [10 March 1973] 9783/74 Heading C3R A modified homogeneous polycaprolactam containing repeating units and -[-CORCO-NH(CH 2 ) 6 NH-]- is made by (A) condensing #1 sulphonate diester in aqueous solution with excess H 2 N(CH 2 ) 6 NH 2 , (B) adding caprolactam and, in an amount at least equivalent to the excess of H 2 N(CH 2 ) 6 NH 2 , a dicarboxylic acid R(COOH) 2 and (C) removing water and condensing to give the polycaprolactam; where M is an alkali metal, R is C 4-12 alkylene, and R 1 is C 1-10 alkyl. M may be, e.g. Na or Li. In step (A), the molar ratio diester/ H 2 N(CH 2 ) 6 NH 2 may be from 2 to 4. The excess of R(COOH) 2 may be up to 25 % moles, based on the excess of H 2 N(CH 2 ) 6 NH 2 . Step (A) and the condensation in (C) may be performed in an inert atmosphere. In step (C), the water may be removed at 100-140‹ C., and the condensation performed at 100-300‹ C. and at 0À001 Torr to 20 atmos-gauge pressure. The modified polycaprolactam may be added, e.g. in amount of up to 20% wt., to a polycaprolactam composition. The modified polycaprolactam or the composition may be granulated and then used to form filaments, fibres, yarns, or foils which are resistant to acid dyes and can be dyed with basic dyes. The basic dyes may be, e.g.
