    • A disk drive system includes a base, a disk rotably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. The actuator assembly moves the transducer to selected areas of the disk where information reprexentative of data is to be written or read. The actuator assembly maintains the transducer in a transducing relationship with the disk. The actuator assembly also parks the transducer or unloads the transducer to a park position. A portion of the actuator assembly rides over a ramp to a park position. The ramp includes a mechanism for increasing the coefficient of friction on the surface of the ramp. The coefficient of friction on the surface of the ramp is increased to help retain the actuator in its parked position. This helps maintain the actuator assembly in a parked position in the event of shock loading from dropping a computer or a disk drive. This in turn helps prevent head crashes or failure of the disk drive and possible data loss.

    • An apparatus for latching an actuator of a disc drive at a park position in the presence of applied mechanical shocks. An inertial latching system includes a contact feature coupled to and moveable with the actuator and a stationary surface along and in contact with which the contact feature moves to and from a park position. An inertial latching element is moveable in response to applied mechanical shock from an unlatched position to a latched position, with the inertial latching element normally biased to the unlatched position. The inertial latching element includes a moveable contact surface which, when the inertial latching element is in the latched position, is disposed at an angle relative to the stationary surface, thus forming a narrowing path which prevents the contact feature from moving away from the park position in a critical direction.

The snubbing mechanism includes an engaging mechanism for engaging the disc when the edge of the disc moves the design limit; the engaging mechanism operating to engage the disc without affecting the recording surface. In one form, the snubbing mechanism includes a slot to receive an edge of the disc. The engaging mechanism is supported within the slot to engage the disc, such as a chamfer surface between the edge and the recording surface, when the edge of the disc moves the design limit.
