Thrashing-machines. - In a ma. chine for de-seeding flax, two spring- pressed rollers c , d are arranged one above and one below a central roller b and are driven therefrom by gearing l, m, n. The shafts carrying the rollers are supported in bearings in standards a. The bearings c , d are controlled by a spring f engaging the bearings c and a frame g which carries the bearing d and slides in guides e. The bearings c , d allow a slight amount of play. The shaft b may be hand or power driven. According to the Provisional Specification, two rollers may be employed, the upper one being driven from the lower one and having freedom to lift at one end against the action of springs. A universal joint may be provided between the spindle of the upper roller and the spindle of its driving-gear.

Acetylene.-The carbide is placed in a tubular chamber B, which is divided into two compartments, for alternate use, each of which is fitted with a hinged door secured by a stud g and a winged nut g . The chamber B passes through a vessel C, which contains water and communicates by tubes E with the generating-chambers B Through each of these tubes passes a rod f carrying a disc valve F at the top, and a water-distributing plate f at the bottom. In operation, when one of the doors is tightly closed, an arm H carried by it lifts the valve rod f and water falls upon the carbide. The gas produced passes up the tube E into the chamber C, and expels water therefrom by the pipe I into an upper chamber, the cover of which fits loosely. When gas is drawn off by the pipe J, water again obtains access to the carbide and so on. When the door is opened for recharging the chamber B, the valve F falls upon its seat.
