    • A valve having a valve closing member (16) rotatably supported on one or more valve stems (22) which are positional infinitely adjustable is disclosed. The valve has a valve body defining a bore (14) with an upper passageway extending from the bore. A valve stem (22) extends coaxially through the passageway and rotatably supports the valve closing member in the bore. A cartridge (24) is coaxially located within the passageway between the valve body and the stem. The cartridge captures the valve stem and engages the passageway via screw threads (30) allowing for infinite positional adjustment. The cartridge also houses bearings (38) for rotation of the stem and seals (40, 42, and 44) for sealing the passageway. The valve body may have a second passageway coaxially aligned with the first passageway in which a second valve stem is located. The second stem (60) engages the passageway via screw threads allowing for infinite positional adjustment. The adjustable stems allow the valve closing member to remain perfectly centered within the bore for maximum valve operational life.

    • A coupling assembly is disclosed for joining pipe elements to one another end-to-end. First and second rings are attached to an end of each pipe element. Each ring has an outwardly facing surface with a groove which receives a sealing member. A band is positioned in overlying relation surrounding the rings when the pipe ends are arranged in end-to-end relationship. The band has an inwardly facing surface engaged with the sealing members. The band also has oppositely disposed end faces. End plates are attached to each end face. The end plates project radially inwardly in overlapping engagement with the rings to retain the pipe elements in end-to-end relation within the band.

    • A pipe coupling assembly is disclosed including a fitting having an opening surrounded by an inwardly facing conical surface. A pipe element has an end portion with an outwardly facing conical surface that fits within the opening and engages the inwardly facing conical surface. A shoulder is positioned on the pipe element. A retaining ring surrounds the pipe element and engages the shoulder. A fastener connects the retaining ring to the fitting. The fastener is adjustably tightenable to draw the retaining ring toward the fitting and force the pipe end portion into engagement with the fitting. One or more seals may be positioned between the engaged conical surfaces. The seal may be made of graphite for high temperature applications. An adapter ring that fits between the pipe and the fitting is also disclosed. The adapter ring has conical surfaces that engage the conical surfaces of the pipe and the fitting.

    • A coupling for joining pipe elements in end to end relation is disclosed. The coupling includes interconnectable coupling segments having connection members at opposite ends. The connection members are tightenable for drawing the segments toward one another and into engagement with the pipe elements. Each segment has a concavity positioned between inwardly projecting arcuate surfaces that engage grooves in the pipe elements. The concavities house a sealing member that extends circumferentially around the pipe elements. Angularly oriented surfaces are positioned adjacent to the connection members. The surfaces on facing segments engage one another and cause the segments to rotate in opposite directions about an axis perpendicular to the pipe elements. The concavities are angularly oriented with respect to the axis so that when the segments rotate, the cavities receive the sealing member without distorting it. A method of joining pipe elements end to end is also disclosed.

    • A guide and a guide follower for cutting pipes are disclosed. The guide has a chain with ends attached to movable jaws. The jaws are mounted on a pair of locking pliers. The chain is positionable circumferentially around the pipe. A plurality of disks are mounted lengthwise along the chain in spaced relation to one another. The disks have surfaces that engage the pipe and edges that face away from the pipe and engage the guide follower mounted on a saw. The guide follower is a channel with flanges spaced apart so as to receive the disk edges and allow the channel to pass along the disks but not deviate from the intended line of cut. A plurality of support disks are positioned on an opposite side of the chain. The support disks engage the pipe and stabilize the guide when it is placed under tension by the pliers.

    • A dry accelerator (1) for use in a dry, pressurized-gas, liquid sprinkler fire control and suppression system, that is response-sensitive to a decay in gas pressure in the system, caused by a system-triggering event, is disclosed. The dry accelerator is actuated to in turn accelerate the actuation of at least one other device in the system that controls the release of a liquid fire-extinguent. The dry accelerator generally includes a housing with two gas chambers (3, 4) therein, separated by a diaphragm. A rapid decline in system gas pressure causes a disequilibrium in pressure between the two chambers causing the device to become actuated. System response time is shorter than if the dry accelerator were not present, because the system pressure does not have to decline to as low a level before a system check valve is triggered to make the liquid extinguent available at the sprinkler heads. The dry accelerator is response-sensitive to a drop in system pressure of less than about 5 psi from the initial system pressure; and it is utilizable in all types of systems, regardless of the initial system operating gas pressure.
