A writing instrument, e.g. a ball-point pen, has a deformable body wherein the end of the body carrying the writing point comprises a tip 1 rigid in the longitudinal direction and connected to the main portion 6 of the body of the instrument by an articulated joint 5 which allows the main body portion 6 to move out of axial alignment with the tip 1 during writing and to return resiliently to a rest position after use. The joint 5 may be an elastically deformable extruded plastic sleeve secured at opposite ends to the parts 1, 6. The ball-point writing unit extends the full length of the body and is formed of flexible material. In a modification the parts 5, 6 are formed integrally of elastically deformable material. In another form the parts 1, 6 are connected only by the flexible writing unit one end of which is secured by a friction fit in each part. The tip 1 may be encircled by a sleeve of resilient cellular material, which is located in an annular groove in the tip, to provide a rest for the fingers during writing; alternatively an annular recess in the part 1 may be covered by a forward extension the main body part when this is composed of elastically deformable material.

摘要： A process for isolating substantially pure natural L-. b. -3-indolylalanine (L-. b. -3) from a mixture of amino acids, such as a protein hydrolysate, is described. A protein hydrolysate, for example of casein or soy protein, is passed over a polymeric resin attractive to aromatic amino acids but not attractive to aliphatic amino acids. The aromatic amino acids are retained on the resin while the aliphatic amino acids pass over the resin and are collected. The resin is then washed with water to displace any residual aliphatic acids which may be physically associated with but not bound to the resin. Thereafter, the resin is eluted with a dilute acid to displace L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine and provide a solution thereof while allowing L-. b. -3 to be retained on the resin. The resin is then further eluted with a dilute base to displace L-. b. -3 from the resin and provide a solution of L-. b. -3. Substantially pure natural L-. b. -3 is recoverable from this solution.
