High speed pulp 24 from a slice 22 is projected on to a Fourdrinier paper-making machine wire-cloth 26 &c. passing about a suction cylindermould roll 20, the shell of which is counter-bored to provide compartments 28 which receive white water and carry it clear of the couch 29 after which it is flung off against a shield 50, the shell passing over a succession of three or more boxes 32, operating at negative, neutral or positive pressures, alternate boxes operating at one of said pressures and the remaining boxes operating at another of said pressures to give a pulsating effect to aid felting. The web may be couched on to a felt 38 with the aid of suction or 42. Sealing strips 35 are fitted to the walls of the boxes 32. In modifications, the wire-cloth cylinder cover 26 may be replaced by a Fourdrinier wire-cloth led off in the usual manner; or the slice 22 may be on the rising side of the roll 20 to give a larger drainage arc; or the compartments receiving the white water may be formed by radial partitions into which water may be supplied just before pulp from the slice reaches wire-cloth to aid in controlling the rate of drainage of white water; or a flexible, endless belt, which may have a flexible metal lining and be drilled like the roll 20 may replace that roll; it may have a wire-cloth covering and support a travelling wire-cloth over suction boxes.

A pulp suspension for a paper-making machine is supplied at 27 to a gently-sloping, tapered distributer pipe 20 having a succession of branches 40, so shaped and dimensioned that each takes off an approximately equal supply and delivers it to a tapered flow-spreader 42 which may deliver directly on to the papermaking machine, or, there may be interposed a driven flow-evener roll in a compartment closely surrounding it. In a modification, the separate flow-spreaders 42 and branch pipes 40 are substituted by a single, full-width, flowspreading channel receiving pulp directly from the tapered distributer pipe 20. Part of the pulp may be re-circulated at 33.
