    • The present invention provides an apparatus and method for operation therefore. The apparatus, in one embodiment, includes an optical coupling structure disposed within a cladding region, wherein the optical coupling structure includes a first guiding portion and a second guiding portion. In this embodiment the first guiding portion has a first end proximate a core of a planar waveguide, and a second end proximate the second guiding portion and having a first thickness. Moreover, in this embodiment the second guiding portion has a first end proximate the first guiding portion and a second end, the second end of the second guiding portion having a second thickness less than the first thickness.

    • There is provided a method and apparatus for optically filtering a communication signal. More specifically, in one embodiment, there is provided an apparatus comprising an optical filter having first and second input ports and first and second output ports, the optical filter being configured to transmit light in a target frequency range to the first output port in response to receiving light at the first input port and being configured to transmit light in the target frequency range to the second input port in response to receiving light at the second output port, and first and second photodiodes, the first diode being located to be illuminated by light from the first output port and the second photodiode being located to be illuminated by light from the second input port.

    • A waveguide turn having two waveguides oriented at an angle with respect to one another and optically coupled to one another by a reflective surface. In one embodiment, the reflective surface is a side of a trench formed in the core and cladding regions of the waveguides, which is designed to reflect light based on total internal reflection (TIR). The reflective surface can be designed to have an appropriate curved shape to reduce coupling losses between the waveguides. Due to relatively sharp turn (reflection) angles accessible with the reflective surface, the circuit area occupied by a waveguide turn of the invention is significantly smaller than that for a typical prior-art waveguide turn.
