Annular-chamber type.-Two or more vanes are hinged to the rotary piston drum and rotate in contact with the casing, being actuated by two cams g, Fig. 1, fixed at either end of the cylinder. The vanes are provided with a stop n which co-acts with a stop o and prevents them from exerting unnecessary pressure on the chamber walls. Each vane is constructed with a cylindrical inner surface p, the axis of which coincides with the line of contact of the vane with the working-chamber, or they may be constructed as shown in Fig. 4, q being the centre of the arcs r, p. The cams are constructed parallel to the casing and abutment. The slide valve m enables the engine to be reversed. The sides of the vanes have recesses containing packing- strips, wedge-shaped in cross-section and pressed against sloping walls of the recesses by springs. Longitudinal movement of the strips is prevented by pins. The sides of the rotary piston drum are similarly packed by curved spring packing-strips z. The admission of the working fluid is controlled by a tappet valve worked from a cam on the main shaft, the construction of the mechanism being shown in Fig. 3. The length of the spindle may be altered by means of the nuts 4. The levers 5 are pivoted to a fixed part 6 of the engine and are connected to the spindle through the pin and slot as shown. At the end of these levers are arms capable of swinging in one direction. The rotating cam knocks one out of the way and operates the other. The improvements are applicable to internal-combustion engines as well as to ordinary fluid-pressure engines.
