摘要： An apparatus for performing mathematical calculations and for converting postal zip code information into postal zone information comprises a mathematical logic circuit which is programmed to perform mathematical calculations. A converter circuit, incorporated in the apparatus in removable, replaceable, modular form, is programmed to determine the postal zone designating each of a plurality of specific geographical destinations of mail as a function of the zip code associated with each of the geographical destinations. Since the postal zone associated with each destination zip code is also a function of the location from which mail originates, the converter logic circuit is programmed to perform the determination for a specific originating location. The apparatus may be adapted for use at different originating locations by substituting an appropriately programmed modular converter logic circuit for one which is inappropriately programmed. Alternatively, the converter logic circuit may be reprogrammed while interfaced with the remainder of the apparatus. A switching device is also provided for selectively operating the apparatus in a calculator mode or in a zip code-to-zone conversion mode.

An operator-controlled auxiliary clock is included to permit the operator to step the circuit being monitored through its operating sequence.

A mechanical restraint is used to restrict the movement of the substrate through the print zone such that the substrate is allowed to move a fixed distance after the print head has printed one printed line until the last is printed. The fixed distance is substantially equal to the width of one printed line.

A facsimile machine is provided with one or more ports for coupling with other office equipment, such as, for example, postage meters, postage scales, personal computers, etc. Data transfers from a service center or the like are received by the facsimile machine and identified as to which device is the intended recipient. The facsimile machine can then send the data transfer to the intended device, or store the data transfer for sending to the intended device at a later time. Accordingly, only a single analog telephone line is required for all of the devices coupled to the facsimile machine.

In some applications, the method includes having the security device perform a partial pre-calculation of an indicia taking into account only non-varying and slowly varying components of the indicia; having the security device set aside a location in a scratch pad memory of the security device for use as virtual ascending/descending registers and having the security device set the virtual ascending/descending registers to the current value of the official ascending/descending registers.
