    • 1290739 Extracting aromatics ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 23 April 1970 [12 May 1969] 19432/70 Addition to 1258194 Heading C5E Aromatics are selectively separated from a feed stream by contacting the feed stream with a slurry comprising a solid Werner complex capable of forming an insoluble inclusion compound with the aromatics, and an inert liquid solvent, the solvent extracting at least part of the aromatics from the feed stream and promoting the formation of two liquid phases in equilibrium with the inclusion compound, one liquid phase comprising feed stream depleted in aromatics and the second liquid phase comprising solvent enriched in aromatics associated with the inclusion compound as a slurry. The Werner complex has the formula AB x C y , where A is a metallic ion of atomic number >11, B is nitrogen base, C is an anion and and y are 1-6. The solvent may be a C 2 -C 12 liquid ether alcohol or liquid polyol, propylene carbonate, NMP, sulpholane, dimethylsulphoxide or a liquid phosphate ester. The process may be effected at -50‹ to +180‹ C. and 0À1-50 atmos., preferably in countercurrent. Examples describe the extraction of toluene from admixture with cyclohexane and n-heptane, and of benzene from a steam-cracked naphtha using Ni-(4-methylpyridine) 4 (SCN) 2 and propylene carbonate.
