A ventilator outlet providing alternatively a jet of air or a diffused stream comprises an outer cylinder 1 with one or more ports 2 in its lateral wall and ports 4 in an end plate 3, an inner cylinder 6 rotatable within it with similar ports 8, 9, and a duct 10 connected to the end plate of the inner cylinder and forming a partition with the side and end ports of the cylinders, a directional outlet nozzle 14 being located in the flared end of the duct which projects beyond the open end of the inner cylinder. As shown in Fig. 3 when ports 2, 8, register the end plate ports are masked and air entering the annulus between the duct and inner cylinder issues as a diffused stream. When ports 4, 9, register a central jet is provided and in a further position of the inner cylinder all the ports are masked or a separate shutoff arrangement may be incorporated in the outlet 14. Intermediate positions provide a combined jet and diffused stream. An indicator pointer 15 is attached to the inner cylinder flange.

Toothed gearing.-In toothed reducing gearing for use with marine engines &c. of the type in which a series of wheels 3 each of one or two diameters are rotatably mounted in a carrier 5, which may be secured to the driven shaft 6 or may be stationary, and gear with a sun-wheel 2 and annulus 7 or with two sun-wheels, the wheels 3 are circumferentially adjustable in the carrier 5 so as to ensure equal loads on each wheel. Some of the wheels may be so adjusted as to ensure equal loading of such wheels on reversal of drive. The wheels 3 are retained by bolts 15 on hollow pins 4 carried in bushes 8 fitting loosely in holes in the carrier 5. Flanges 9 on the bushes and loose washers 10 engage circumferential groove in the carrier and may be secured by bolts (not shown) to the carrier to lock the parts in position when the wheels 3 have been circumferentially adjusted by taper-headed bolts 11.
