    • A system and method for providing backup communications using Power over Ethernet (PoE) are disclosed. A backup communication system (BCS) is provided as part of a networked (TCP/IP) hospital communication system. The BCS is coupled to a power line used to provide power to a PoE switch. When TCP/IP communications are interrupted, the BCS receives patient call signals from patient room terminals over a secondary communication mode of the power line, and transmits those call signals to a nurses' station. The call signals can be generated by coupling a pulse-coded AC signal onto the PoE wires, or by sending voltage coded data in one direction and current-coded data in the other direction. Different signals or signal levels can be used to distinguish normal patient calls, patient emergency calls, and code calls. Thus, basic communications can be achieved when TCP/IP are unavailable. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

    • A system and method are disclosed for logically disconnecting fire alarm equipment from elevator control equipment to enable independent testing of each equipment set. The system and method may include an interface having a fire alarm equipment side and an elevator control side which are interconnected by a plurality of relays. A plurality of action relays may be associated with specific functions of the elevator controller. A plurality of bypass relays are interposed between the action relays and the elevator controller so that when a “bypass” operation is initiated, the bypass relays prevent signals from the action relays from reaching the elevator controller. As such, the action relays can be tested without impacting ongoing elevator operations. In addition, the logical disconnection arrangement ensures proper functioning of the system once testing is completed. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

    • An improved system and method are disclosed for providing test functionality for fire and security system monitoring networks. An operator at a workstation node can place points into a “test-mode” while those points remain “live” (i.e., the system remains operational). For points placed in test-mode, if/when such points transition into a non-normal state (e.g., an alarm state), no flashing or other indication requiring a manual acknowledgement from the operator of the workstation node will occur. In addition, for systems employing banners, active lists, automatic printouts or graphics icons that indicate events, no such indications will occur at the workstation node. The disclosed system and method can also generate documentation verifying completion of system testing in accordance with local jurisdictional requirements. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

    • Various embodiments are generally directed to a system and method for providing emergency override of informational displays in an emergency notification system. An embodiment may include an emergency detection module coupled to a display override module. The display override module may be coupled to a third-party display driver. When an emergency condition is detected, the emergency detection module may use the display override module to override any display messages from the third-party display module in order to display an emergency display message. In an embodiment, the display override module may be a switch box. In another embodiment, the display override module may be a RSS feed subscribed to by the third-party display driver. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

    • Techniques for visual notification appliance selection are described. A set of dimensions for a structure are received by a processor and stored on a computer-readable storage medium. The processor calculates a maximum distance between a mounting location for a visual notification appliance and a location within the structure based upon the received dimensions. The processor also estimates an illuminance value for each of a plurality of angular paths within the structure. A visual notification appliance is selected that has an illumination rating that produces a minimum illuminance value at the maximum distance and at each of the plurality of angular paths. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
