    • The invention relates to a variable roll width type rolling roll constructed such that in order to enhance strength by eliminating stress concentration on a structure which drivingly couples a roll on a drive side to the other roll, a sleeve is fitted onto a coupling rod projecting coaxially from an arbor on a drive side, rolls are provided on the arbor and sleeve, respectively, to be supported by bearings, and the coupling rod is coupled to the sleeve by a screw gearing mechanism to make the sleeve movable in its axial direction so that the width of a roll can be varied. A location of a concavo-convex engagement effected by a spline or key or the like for transmitting rotation of the arbor to the sleeve is positioned outwardly of the center in the axial direction of the bearings for the sleeve so that such concavo-convex engagement is not affected by a bending due to rolling reaction forces, thereby preventing stress concentration.
