    • A method of operating a transfer printer (1), the transfer printer comprising first and second spool supports each being configured to support a spool (3,4) of ribbon (2), a ribbon drive configured to cause movement of ribbon (2) from the first spool support to the second spool support along a predetermined ribbon path, and a printhead (7), the printhead being configured to selectively transfer ink from the ribbon to a substrate as the substrate is moved relative to the printhead in a direction of substrate movement. The method comprises driving the ribbon in a direction parallel to the direction of substrate movement, printing a first plurality of images onto a first respective plurality of substrates, driving the ribbon in a direction opposite to the direction of substrate movement, driving the ribbon in the direction parallel to the direction of substrate movement, and printing a second plurality of images onto a second respective plurality of substrates. Printing each image of the first and second pluralities of images results in corresponding pluralities of first (15 a, b, c) and second (16 a, b, c) negative images being formed on the ribbon, wherein each negative image of the first plurality of negative images (15 a, b, c) is located adjacent a negative image of the second plurality of negative images (16 a, b, c) on the ribbon.

    • A method and system for printing bi-directionally with a thermal print head movable back and forth along a print path adjacent a ribbon to transfer ink therefrom onto a substrate. The ribbon being drawn from an unwind reel and adjacent the print path, and the ribbon being clamped to maintain tension on the ribbon at least when the print head moves in the same direction as ribbon is drawn along the print path. A rotary drive member is rotatable in a first direction to actuate a brake member that clamps the ribbon against a fixed ribbon guide, and the rotary drive member is rotatable in a second opposing direction to rotate the rewind reel to draw ribbon from the unwind reel.

    • An inked-ribbon feed mechanism comprises an electric drive motor (5), reversible for reversing the ribbon feed direction, and a reversing switch (32) for the motor (5). A roller (31) operating the reversing switch (32) travels along a cam (28, 29) formed on one arm (21) of a lever (19, 20, 21). A further arm (19) of this lever carries one (14) of two ribbon guides (13, 14) coupled with each other. The motor (5) drives a worm (6). A worm wheel (7) is firmly connected to a pinion (8) and is displaceable together with the latter along the worm (6) in two positions. In one position (8) the pinion meshes with a toothed rim (3) provided on one of the two ribbon spool carriers (1). In the other position (8') the pinion meshes with a toothed rim (4) formed on the other ribbon spool carrier (2).

    • An ink-ribbon reversing device for use in a printing machine having an ink-ribbon winding mechanism is provided. The device includes two ink-ribbon spools and associated spool gears mounted on separate spool shafts spaced apart from each other. A drive shaft is positioned between the spool gears with an arm rotatably mounted thereon. A first gear is fixed to the drive shaft. A second gear rotatably mounted on one end of the arm is in engagement with the first gear. One of two actuatable change-over levers abuts the free end of the arm to maintain engagement between the second gear and one spool gear to drive the associated ribbon spool. At the completion of ribbon winding, the change-over lever is displaced, releasing the arm which rotates about the drive shaft to abut the other change-over lever and engage the second gear with the other spool gear to drive the associated ribbon spool. The invention is characterized in that the arm is rotated in one direction by said first gear to provide for the change-over in engagement of the spool gears.
