Services are provided to standardize the interactions between computer telephony applications and telephone sets, to unify those interactions into a coherent whole, and to simplify the interactions by automatically performing common tasks. A default Telephone Manager provides all the functionality needed to support basic telephony. With all call processing performed on the host computer, telephone sets attached to the host need have no native intelligence. Support for transporting voice to distant locations is provided entirely by the host computer rendering the telephone set independent of any transport technology.

摘要： A system and method for remotely controlling one or more monitoring devices in a user's household in the event of emergency so as to more productively monitor the emergency situation on a real-time basis. The monitoring devices may include a number of multimedia instruments such as a telephone with an answering machine, a computer with a built-in digital camera, a video recording device, a cellular phone with an integrated digital camera, etc. An emergency service provider may remotely activate the monitoring devices in the user's vicinity upon receiving an emergency help request from the user, and receive the information sent by the monitoring devices to enable the service personnel to plan appropriate response to the emergency at hand. Such an arrangement allows for better monitoring of the user's vicinity in an emergency situation without the need for prolonged user participation in narrating or describing the emergency situation. Further, the emergency service provider may obtain a better picture of the emergency and its impact by controlling appropriate monitoring devices available in the user's vicinity. The remote activation and control of a monitoring device may be accomplished via the Internet.

摘要： System are generally comprised of a (“PBX”) module, a text server, a voice mail system, at least one telephone, at least one terminal device, and in some cases, a computer network. Communication paths are used to selectively couple the above elements together, as needed to execute or implement the particular application or feature. Calls (TDD or otherwise) are initiated over the Internet or the world wide web to the text server, which is preferably in communication with the PBX module. The PBX module is in communication with a text server via modem. The text server is directly or indirectly in communication with a voice mail system and with the PBX module. The text server may be in communication with the voice mail system via voice card and PBX module or directly with certain voice mail system with specialized software. The PBX module is in communication with at least one telephone. The text server is in communication with at least one terminal device via local area network, the Internet, or some other form of a network. Processes use a bulletin board system which presents a number of options (e.g. (i) leave a message; (ii) transfer to a persons telephone number; and/or (iii) log on to a specific mailbox) to direct a call through the voice mail system, computer network, telephone system, PBX, and tax server. At each stage, a first party (a calling party) is generally prompted to provide needed information to identify a second party (the called party) or instruction to instruct the preferred system what to do. Depending upon the instruction provided by the first and second parties, voice messages are left in voice mail, chat discussion are set-up, e-mail messages are sent, and voice mail boxes are set up etc. Message or signals can be sent to and from the voice mail system, the computer system, and text server.

The callback monitor includes a timer; when the timer expires, the monitoring ends. In alternative embodiments, the timer can be extended.

摘要： A cordless telephone set includes a base unit and a terminal unit. The base unit, which has detected by a terminal-unit detecting circuit that the terminal unit is placed thereon, awaits an identification number of the terminal unit to be transmitted from the terminal unit.
