    • A fuel injection device comprises electrically controlled fuel injectors, each opening into an air induction passage upstream of a respective intake valve of a combustion chamber. Each injector has an air-fuel mixture chamber. A throttle valve in the induction passage is constructed to close it when in a minimum opening position. An air line connects the induction passage to the mixture chambers and has an additional air electrically controlled valve. A supplemental electrically controlled valve is branched out of the line and opens into the induction passage downstream of the throttle valve. An electronic unit controls the injectors and the supplementary valve and opens the supplemental valve during cold start of the engine at low temperature and during operation of the engine as a brake at normal temperature, high speed and with the throttle valve closed.

    • A carburetor including a throttle valve for regulating the flow of air through the body of the carburetor and to an engine, with fuel being introduced into the air flow for intermixture therewith, and with the device including an air actuated element which is preferably located downstream of the throttle valve and is adapted to be displaced automatically by the air to different positions varying in correspondence with the rate of air flow through the device, and which forms a restriction varying in size with the rate of air flow and acting to enhance dispersal of the fuel within the air and assure intimate intermixture of the air and fuel for optimum functioning of the engine. The fuel may be premixed with a secondary flow of air before delivery of the fuel and secondary air as a combined stream into the primary flow of air, and the combined stream may be drawn by vacuum into the primary flow of air at the location of the restriction formed by the flow actuated member. Precise control of the amount of fuel which is fed into the primary flow is attained by automatic regulation of a valve controlling the amount of secondary air which is mixed with the fuel. A proper air-fuel ratio may be assured by utilizing movement of the air actuated element to control operation of the secondary air valve. Additional automatic controls for starting and idle purposes are actuated by a vacuum responsive element and a thermostatic element.

    • A spark ignition internal combustion engine having an exhaust emission control system including an air pump driven by the engine to pump fresh air directly into the exhaust duct in order to promote a further combustion of partly burnt components in the gases coming from the combustion chambers, excess air pressure being released by a pressure relief valve into an air filter for the induction air; the system also comprises an exhaust gas recirculating system comprising a pneumatic valve which opens, when the conditions are appropriate, to draw off a proportion of the exhaust gases from the exhaust side of the engine and admit them to the induction side of the engine; in addition there is a system for admitting supplementary air to the induction manifold downstream of the carburettor during engine overrun conditions except when the engine is cold, and the carburettor is provided with supplementary pumps and valves which only function when the engine is cold, being inhibited as the engine approaches its normal working temperature.

    • A thermostatic valve mounted in an air cleaner has an inlet connected to an intake manifold of an engine and an outlet connected to a negative pressure chamber of a negative pressure motor for actuating a switching valve pivotally mounted in a throat of the air cleaner, by the opening of the switching valve warmed air around an exhaust manifold of the engine being introduced into the air cleaner for the purpose of ensuring a smooth starting and operation of the engine. The thermostatic valve, for controlling the introduction of the warmed air as well as an amount of additional air fed to the engine as a function of the temperature in the air cleaner, has inside thereof a first passageway communicating the inlet with the inside thereof, a second passageway communicating the outlet with the inside and a third passageway communicating the inside with the air cleaner. A valve member is operatively disposed in both of the first and third passageways for respectively controlling the opening area of the first passageway and the opening and closing of the third passageway, so that the amount of the additional air is controlled through the first passageway and the application of the negative pressure from the intake manifold to the negative pressure motor is controlled by the closure and opening of the third passageway.
