    • 1,125,492. Vinyl polymers in bead form. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 23 Feb., 1966 [1 March, 1965], No. 8001/66. Headings C3C and C3P. An aq. suspension containing a vinyl monomer, the weight ratio of monomer to water not exceeding 1À1: 1, 0À1-0À7% by wt. of at least one solid inorganic suspension stabilizer having a particle size of not more than 50 Á and 0À15- 0À30% of (1) 0À04-0À15% of at least one azo compound capable of acting as an initiator at below 90‹ C. and of producing alkaline decomposition products, (2) 0À02-0À07% benzoyl peroxide and (3) 0À02-0À20% of at least one organic per compound capable of acting as a free radical initiator and having a half-life of 0À1-6À0 hours to 110‹ C., is heated to 78- 85‹ C. for 4-9 hours, whereby the monomer is initially polymerized catalysed by the azo compound whose decomposition products causes the pH of the suspension to be above 6À0, is then heated to 87-100‹ C. for 4-7 hours, whereby further polymerization occurs catalysed by the benzoyl peroxide, and is then heated to 110-135‹ C. for 2-12 hours, whereby further polymerization occurs catalysed by the per compound which, together with the benzoyl peroxide, produces acidic decomposition products which tend to lower the pH, the terminal pH of the suspension being at least 5À9 and the suspension being free of flocculated suspension stabilizer, the suspension is then cooled to room temperature, acidified to a pH of 1 and the polymer is recovered in bead form. The monomer may be styrene. The stabilizer may be tricalcium phosphate with optionally calcium carbonate and may be used with a surfactant, e.g. sodium #-naphthalene sulphonate and a protective colloid, e.g. sodium polyacrylate. The azo compound may be azobisisobutyronitrile and the free radical initiator may be tbutyl perbenzoate, t-butyl peroxy isopropyl carbonate or 2,5 - dimethylhexane - 2,5 - diperbenzoate. A blowing agent, e.g. pentane, hexane, heptane, petroleum ether, cyclohexane or 2- methyl-1-pentene, may be added to the suspension prior to or after polymerization to produce foamable polymers in bead form.
