    • A large diameter waveguide (40) is provided having a diameter d3 of at least about 0.3 millimeters, and an outer cladding (44) with an inner core (42) with a blazed grating (56) included therein, which is written into the inner core at an oblique angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the inner core either for attenuating optical light travelling in the optical waveguide, or for reflecting optical light to or from the optical waveguide. The blazed grating has an optical parameter that changes in response to an application of a compressive force on the optical waveguide. The outer cladding may have the blazed grating written therein. The blazed grating has concatenated periodic or a periodic gratings. The optical waveguide may be shaped like a dogbone structure having wider outer sections (64) and a narrower central section (62) inbetween. The blazed grating is written in the narrower central section of the dogbone structure.

    • A scanning optical monitoring system and method are appropriate for high speed scanning of a WDM signal band. The system and method are able to identify dropped channels or, more generally, discrepancies between the determined or detected channel inventory and a perpetual inventory for the WDM signal, which perpetual inventory specifies the channels that should be present in the WDM signal assuming proper operation of the network. The system includes a tunable optical filter (110) that scans a pass band across a signal band of a WDM signal (10) to generate a filtered signal (114). A photodetector (116) then generates an electrical signal (118) in response to this filtered signal. A decision circuit (130) compares the electrical signal to a threshold and a controller (150), which is responsive to the decision circuit, inventories the channels in the WDM signal (10).
