摘要： Disclosed is apparatus comprising an optically pumped optical gain device that comprises a rare earth (RE)-doped planar waveguide with non-uniform dopant distribution in the core of the waveguide. The RE ions are advantageously distributed such that the ions are concentrated in a core region in which the mode intensity of both signal radiation and pump radiation is relatively high. In preferred embodiments of a single mode planar waveguide according to the invention the RE ions are substantially concentrated in the central core region. A method of making the disclosed apparatus is also disclosed. The method involves implantation of RE ions into the core region.

摘要： Refractive index distribution lenses may be made by forming refractive index distribution patterns in surfaces of two substrates. The patterns in the two substrates are made to be matching. Then, these surfaces of the two substrates are placed together with the patterns in the substrates coinciding. If the refractive index distribution patterns in the surfaces form semicylindrical lenses with parallel axes, the substrates may be put together so that the axes of the lenses in one substrate coincide with corresponding axes of semicylindrical lenses in the other substrate to form a rod lens array. If the refractive index distribution patterns in the two substrates are constant in directions parallel to the surfaces of these substrates but vary in the direction perpendicular to the surfaces, the surfaces of these substrates may be put together to form a slab lens.

摘要： A beam-steering optical transceiver is provided. The transceiver includes one or more modules, each comprising an antenna chip and a control chip bonded to the antenna chip. Each antenna chip has a feeder waveguide, a plurality of row waveguides that tap off from the feeder waveguide, and a plurality of metallic nanoantenna elements arranged in a two-dimensional array of rows and columns such that each row overlies one of the row waveguides. Each antenna chip also includes a plurality of independently addressable thermo-optical phase shifters, each configured to produce a thermo-optical phase shift in a respective row. Each antenna chip also has, for each row, a row-wise heating circuit configured to produce a respective thermo-optic phase shift at each nanoantenna element along its row. The control chip includes controllable current sources for the independently addressable thermo-optical phase shifters and the row-wise heating circuits.

摘要： A method for fabricating an optical device wherein the device comprises a first substrate wafer with at least one buried optical waveguide on an approximately flat planar surface of the substrate and a second substrate wafer with at least a second buried optical waveguide. The waveguides so formed may be straight or curved along the surface of the wafer or curved by burying the waveguide at varying depth along its length. The second wafer is turned (flipped) and bonded to the first wafer in such a manner that the waveguides, for example, may form an optical coupler or may cross over one another and be in proximate relationship along a region of each. As a result, three-dimensional optical devices are formed avoiding the convention techniques of layering on a single substrate wafer.

摘要： A method for realizing a semiconductor waveguide and an ultra-low-loss dielectric waveguide disposed on the same substrate is disclosed. The method includes forming a partial dielectric waveguide structure on the substrate, wherein the dielectric waveguide is annealed to reduce hydrogen incorporation, and wherein the top cladding of the dielectric waveguide is only partially formed by a first dielectric layer. A second substrate comprising a semiconductor layer having a second dielectric layer disposed on its top surface is bonded to the first substrate such that the first and second dielectric layers collectively form the complete top cladding for the dielectric waveguide. The second substrate is then removed and the semiconductor layer is patterned to define the semiconductor waveguide core.
