The controller (50) is also configured to compress the plurality of range datasets (206) by storing in the memory (54) a portion of each of the values assigned to at least one of the plurality of range bins (208), wherein the portion is defined to exclude a first number of redundant sign bits (222) of each value. The controller (50) may further compress the portion by retaining a second number of bits of the data by excluding some of the least significant bits (226) of each value.

A signal pre-processor samples a received baseband radar signal and generates a time-expanded signal which is a replica of the real received radar signal, but with a much lower nominal pulse repetition frequency, PRF n . The signal pre-processor includes a sampling circuit which receives the baseband signal, and a timing circuit which controls the sampling circuit. The timing circuit operates by causing samples of the baseband signal to be taken at progressively later portions of subsequent pulses. While the radar system is particularly useful in demonstrating radar principles in a classroom setting, it has other applications.
