    • Pressure-sintered polycrystalline mixed materials, with a base of boron nitride, oxides and carbides, are provided in which the hexagonal boron nitride fraction is about 30 to about 85% by weight, the oxide fraction (ZrO.sub.2, MgO) is about 10 to about 50% by weight, and the carbide fraction (SiC, TiC, ZrC) is about 5 to about 20% by weight. These mixed materials have a density of at least 94% of the theoretical density and can be produced by hot-pressing powder mixtures composed of hexagonal boron nitride, the selected oxides and carbides at temperatures in the range of from 1500.degree. C. to 1800.degree. C. under a die pressure of 7 to 20 MPa or by isostatically hot-pressing, in a vacuum tight closed case, at temperatures in the range from about 1400.degree. C. to about 1700.degree. C. under a pressure of about 100 to about 300 MPa in a high-pressure autoclave using an inert gas as the pressure transfer medium. These mixed materials are resistant to liquid metals, wear resistant and thermal shock resistant and, owing to these properties, are suitable for use as detachment or break rings in the horizontal continuous casting of steel and non-ferrous metals.

    • A break ring formed by providing a frame having a cross-section complementary to the exterior portion of the break ring, and the frame having an interior base of the cross-section of the break ring which will be in contact with the molten metal in the continuous caster is disclosed. The frame is thereafter filled with plasma sprayed boron nitride, silicon nitride, or whatever material is to immediately contact the metal in the horizontal continuous caster. This is subsequently followed by the spraying of a substrate onto the skin of the break ring, whereafter the body portion is finally filled. Detonation gun-type spraying is also contemplated, but a plasma gun forms a superior coating and gives more flexibility. Finally, the body is formed interiorly of the break ring further by plasma application or by casting. In one option, a cooling tube is laid into the body portion. The break ring itself is characterized by a continuous construction with a skin preferably of boron nitride or related materials, a substrate of zirconium oxide or aluminum oxide or silicon carbide, and a body of copper or equivalent materials. Optionally the body contains a coolant tube which can be constantly flushed during the course of casting and maintain the break ring at a temperature below that of the metal being cast.

    • A continuous casting apparatus, continuous casting method and aluminum alloy cast bar enable stable and smooth high-speed casting with a reduced amount of a lubricant and prevent occurrence of breakout and lubricant reaction products, resulting in reduction in ingot failure. The present invention provides a continuous casting apparatus for producing aluminum alloy cast bars, including a tundish containing molten aluminum alloy, a mold which has an upstream end and a downstream end and to which the molten aluminum alloy is supplied through the upstream end of the mold, an insulation member which is disposed between the tundish and the upstream end of the mold and which has a molten metal passage for allowing communication between the tundish and the mold, and a separation layer disposed on the insulation member and having an aperture which is in communication with the molten metal passage, wherein a lubricant which has been supplied to the mold and transferred to the insulation members is blocked with the separation layer.
