    • Improved method of fabricating boron fiber and aluminum matrix composite structures, especially gas turbine compressor blades having titanium metal skins. Titanium skins (32, 32') and boron aluminum composite cores (34) are preformed by gas pressure and hard dies prior to hot pressing. The composite sheets (34) of the core are preformed with the use of expendable carrier sheets (36, 38) which hold the stacked sheets firmly as both the carrier sheets and composites are shaped through moderate temperature and gas pressure against a hard die (46). The preforming permanently shapes and lightly bonds the composite sheets. The skins (32, 32') are preformed in an analogous process using gas pressurization of a metal envelope into die cavities (24, 24'). The skins and composite core are then hot pressed in hard dies (54, 54') to form the finished part.

    • PURPOSE:To perform efficient and inexpensive plastic working of a pipe-shaped work piece by applying a liquid pressure on the work piece via a shape memory alloy as a pressure transmission element. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical assembly is constituted of two sheets of discs 1, the space between which is maintained by means of a stay bolt 2, and a pipe- shaped element 3 consisting of a shape memory alloy attached on the side face thereof. A work piece 4 is sandwiched between the assembly and a metal 5 having a circular hole and both ends of the element 3 are tightened by means of halved retainers 6. A liquid is filled in the assembly and a pressure is applied thereon to deform largely the element 3 by the pressure, thereby pressing the work piece 4 to the metal 5. The work piece 4 is thus plastically deformed or is subjected to working such as embossing on the surface thereof. The element 3 is largely deformed in this stage but if the liquid pressure is released, the original shape is restored.

CONSTITUTION: In an apparatus(100) for forming herringbone grooves on hydrodynamic bearing which is inserted onto the inner circumferential surface of metal blank(107) to form the herringbone grooves, the apparatus for forming herringbone grooves on hydrodynamic bearing comprises an elastic expansion part(101) comprising elastic cylinder(102) elastically expanded or contracted, cavity(103) formed inside the elastic cylinder so that fluid is contained in the cavity, and hydraulic compressor connected to the cavity through hydraulic circuit to elastically expand or contract the elastic cylinder by supplying fluid to the cavity or discharging fluid from the cavity; and a forming member(105) arranged on the outer circumferential surface of the elastic cylinder so that the herringbone grooves are formed on the inner circumferential surface(109) of the metal blank when the elastic cylinder of the elastic expansion part is expanded, wherein the forming member comprises a herringbone groove forming pattern consisted of a plurality of groove forming protrusions formed on the outer circumferential surface(104) of the elastic cylinder of the elastic expansion part, wherein the forming member comprises elastic cylinder member and herringbone groove forming pattern, and wherein the forming member comprises a plurality of pressure transmitting plates and one or more groove forming protrusions(106).
