    • A system comprising replicated sub-systems (x, Y, Z) the outputs (5, 6, 7) of which are consolidated to provide a single output (9) by a majority voter (8) for reliability and availability. The integrity of the system, i. e. confidence in the single consolidated output (9), is provided by an electronic coincidence checking (10) arrangement which involves several levels of checking. A first level of checking is carried out on all sub-system outputs (5, 6, 7) by circuits in each sub-system channel. Thus, each channel assesses the other channels and itself for coincidence. These assessments (X' Y 1 Z 1 ; X 2 Y 2 Z 2 ; X 3 Y 3 Z 3 ) are then consolidated in respect of each sub-system at a second level and the final result (11, 12, 13) employed as an inhibit or power supply disabling control if a fault is declared in one sub-system.

    • A current steering circuit for comparing the outputs of two channels of a parallel redundant control system. The voltages and senses of the outputs are mirror-images and are fed into opposite ends (A;B) of four terminal resistor network (Fig 1), of two bias arms (R) and two input arms (R), at the centre junction of which is a light emitting diode (D). One of the bias arms contains oscillating switch means (S) which causes the diode (D) bias voltage to oscillate. When the input voltage at the diode cathode is high the diode will emit light and the voltage at the diode anode will oscillate across a predetermined threshold voltage only when the inputs agree. Two or more circuits can be connected together to compare the outputs of several parallel redundant channel.

    • A communication channel for conveying quasi-static signals representing several alternative states one of which is potentially unsafe, e.g. the control signal for a signal lamp in a railway control system. Each channel has a signature code (Figs. 1 and 2) which is continuously repeated in different forms, e.g. non-inverted (Fig. 2(a)), inverted, or alternately inverted and non-inverted (Fig. 2(b)), to represent different states. When a potentially unsafe state is indicated, the repeated signature is periodically corrupted according to a predetermined error pattern. The channel receiver (Fig. 4) is arranged such that its output (32,34) can only be held in the unsafe state providing both the signature and the error pattern in the received signal are correct.

    • In the receiver of a railway track circuit signal detector an input stage is connected before an anti-alias filter and a digital sampling stage which supplies time-series data samples to a fast Fournier transform processor. The input stage comprises a tuned amplifier stage which «rings» at the track circuit frequency when stimulated by a track circuit signal in the input. The stage acts as a non-limiting, linear amplifier at other frequencies and as a non-linear, limiting amplifier at the track circuit frequency and provides, when stimulated, a virtually pure sinewave output. Since the range of amplitudes is more compressed as a result, more efficient use can be made of the available digital range and of the transform processor.
