    • 280,615. Smith, J. W. July 16, 1926. Stream-cutting machines.-A machine for cutting toffee, caramel and like confectionery comprises strip-cutting means arranged in tandem with cross-cutting means and an intermittent conveyer for the material which is stationary during the cross-cutting. As shown, the strip cutting means comprises rotary disc cutters 11 spaced apart on a shaft 10 driven from a main shaft 3 through gears 16, 17. Cross-cutting is effected by a guillotine 23 carried by a bar 22 reciprocated by rods 34 connected to cranks 33 driven from the shaft 3 through gearing 28, 31. The knife 23 is secured to a slide 24 which is moved transversely in the bar 22 through a link to give a slicing cut. Plates 36, 37 hold down the material which is carried through the machine on boards 39 driven by lugs on a chain 40 passing around sprockets 41. Intermittent movement is imparted to the chain from one of the cranks 33 through a rod 42 and pawl 43 the throw of which is adjusted by a guard plate 49 adjustably held by a slotted connection 50, 51. Fig. 19 shows modified strip-cutting means comprising two sets of cutting discs rotatable about eccentric bushes 61 surrounding a shaft 62 whereby either set can be brought into operation. The operative set of cutters is driven through gears 70, 66 from the shaft 62 which is itself driven from the shaft 3 through gears 63 - - 65. A spring pin holds the operative set in position. Three or more sets of cutters may be provided.

    • 261,135. Smith, J. W. Sept. 4, 1925. Freely-flowing material mixed in conduits.- Apparatus for miixng finely divided solids, or liquids, in a stream of gas for making fuel mixtures for burners, blast furnaces &c., or other purposes, comprises a succession of mixing devices placed in a pipe line and each consisting of a crown of inwardly directed pointed deflectors of slightly helical formation, the deflectors may be arranged to rotate the stream in opposite directions. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 a section is let into the pipe 12 comprising a part 11 formed in halves provided with flanges 18, 19 by means of which the insertion. is supported on a stand 20. The crown 28 is inserted between the flanges 14, 15 and comprises a casting formed with inwardly directed curved points 34 lying in the direction of the stream and helically curved so as to impart slight rotational movement to the stream. The form shown in Fig. 5 comprises stampings supported between flanges 15 in pipe lengths 12 , the members 33 having an opposite twist to the members 34 . The inner surface of the base of the crown is continuous with the inner surface of the pipe. The apparatus is described as applied to a plant for mixing a powdered fuel with air and comprising a container for the powder fitted with a rotary pocket feed.
