    • 727,331. Swaging saw teeth. VOLLMER, H. Oct. 14, 1952 [Oct. 24, 1951], No. 25738/52. Class 145. A machine for swaging and sidedressing saw teeth has a non-circular die 41 on an axially-movable shaft 11 which may be rotated intermittently or continuously, a feed pawl 32 for advancing the saw by the pitch of the teeth, clamps 28, 29 which engage the sides of the teeth during swaging and, during a second pass of the saw S, press the sides of the teeth to the required shape, and an anvil 69 backing up the tip of each tooth. The main driving and control shaft 4 can be coupled either to a power drive shaft 2 or to a manual drive shaft 17 by a clutch 7 and it carries a cam 33 operating the feed pawl 32 through linkage 34, 42 and 31; the pawl holder 49 slides on a fixed track 50 and adjustment means 37 and 45 provide, respectively, for adjusting to suit the pitch of the teeth and the required position of the teeth in the clamps. For swaging, the pawl engages the upper third of the tooth and, for side-dressing, is preferably exchanged for one engaging the bottom of the gullet. The movable clamp jaw 29, which is mounted on a pivoted holder 27, is constantly pressed towards the fixed jaw 28 by a spring 81 and the full clamping or side-dressing pressure is applied intermittently by a cam 12 rotated from the main shaft 4 and acting on the holder through a lever 54, push-rod 55 and adjustable abutment 56. The die shaft 11, in which the die 41 is held by a bolt 76, is rotated by gears 9 and 10 and is reciprocated axially to move the die into and out of the tooth gullet by a lever engaging a cam groove 5 on the hub of the gear 9 and a collar 75 on the hub of the gear 10. An anvil control rod 62 engages the sides of the gear 10 through rollers 67 so that it moves with it and, through inclined surfaces a and b, lowers and raises a slide 63 on which the anvil 69 is angularly adjustable to suit the angle of the back of the saw tooth. The saw S is supported on a rest 25 which is adjustable vertically by a screwed spindle 23. For side-dressing the teeth, the rest 25 is lowered to bring the saw teeth clear of the swaging die and during a second pass of the saw, formed recesses in the jaws press on the teeth to give them a downward and backward taper. The side-dressed width of the teeth can be varied by adjusting the feed to vary the position of each tooth in the tapered jaw-recesses.

    • 776,413. Swaging saw teeth. VOLLMER, H. June 28, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 18636/55. Addition to 727,331. Class 145 The saw swaging machine of the parent Specification, in which a swaging die 41 is advanced axially into the tooth gullet for the swaging operation and the saw is fed forward by a tooth space when the die is withdrawn, has means for oscillating the die through an angle of, say, 180 degrees and the die is angularly adjustable in its shaft 11 so that the length of the swaged portion of the tooth can be varied. ' The shaft 11 is advanced and retracted by a groove cam 104 integral with a gear 101 driven by the main shaft of the machine, the cam being rotatable on the shaft 11 and its groove 110 being engaged by a roller 105 on a fixed pin 111. For oscillating the shaft 11, a gear 94 driven by the main shaft has a crank'pin 96 engaging a slide 97 in a slot 98 in a gear segment 99. which is pivoted at 100 and engages a long gear 95 fixed on the shaft. The ratio of the gear 94 and the main shaft gear is 2 : 1 and the shaft 11 performs a complete idle oscillation in the retracted position. The conical shank 41 1 of the die is drawn into a tapered bore in the shaft 11 by a bolt 76 and an index mark 102 and scale 103 facilitate its angular adjustment. Half of the cross section of the die is, semicircular and the other half is eccentric.
