    • An axial-flow blood pump for pumping blood includes a substantially cylindrical outer enclosure. A tubular housing concentric with and located within the outer enclosure has at one end an inlet and at an opposite end an outlet. A motor stator is concentric with and located between the outer enclosure and the tubular housing. An impeller is concentric with and located within the tubular housing. The impeller is suspended in operation by a combination of passive magnetic forces between magnets within the impeller or magnetized regions of the impeller and the motor stator and hydrodynamic thrust forces generated as blood flows between the tubular housing and a plurality of hydrodynamic thrust bearing surfaces located on the impeller. A volute may be in fluid-tight connection with the outlet of the tubular housing for receiving blood in the axial direction and directing blood in a direction normal to the axial direction. The volute has a flow-improving member extending axially from the volute and into and coaxially with the tubular housing.

    • A system, comprising an implantable electrical device adapted for mounting within the body of the patient, and an implantable power unit adapted for mounting within the body of the patient, the power unit having a receiving coil, a power circuit connected to the receiving coil so that power applied to the receiving coil can be transmitted to the implantable device. The system further comprising an external power supply having a transmitting coil adapted for transcutaneous inductive coupling with the receiving coil to define a system having a resonant frequency varying in relation to a distance between the transmitting and receiving coils, a drive circuit operable to apply an alternating current to the transmitting coil at a variable drive pulse width. A control circuit is operable to (i) monitor a parameter related to mutual inductance between the transmitting and receiving coils; and (ii) adjust the variable transmission frequency to a value having a predetermined difference from the resonant frequency, so as to maintain the transmission frequency with a predetermined difference from the resonant frequency. The power circuit further includes a battery and a routing circuit arranged to route power from the receiving coil to the implantable device to the battery or both when power is received through the receiving coil and from the battery to the implantable device when power is not received by the receiving coil, the control circuit being operable to vary the current in the transmitting coil so as to maintain the monitored parameter within the desired range during the charging operation and during operation when the battery is fully charged

    • An implantable rotary sealless blood pump (11) is provided. The pump (11) includes a housing (12) having an inlet tube (13) on one end and an impeller casing (14) on the other end. A rotor (17) is mounted for rotation within the housing (12), with the rotor (17) having an elongated shaft portion (18) and an impeller (19) attached to the shaft portion (18). The impeller (19) is located within the impeller casing (14). Radial magnetic bearings (28,29) are carried by the shaft portion (18) and radial magnetic bearings (23,24) are carried by the housing (12) for maintaining the shaft portion (18) of the rotor (17) within the inlet tube (13) of the housing (12). A rotor motor (53) includes a plurality of permanent magnets (54) carried by the impeller (19) and a motor stator (56) including an electrically conductive coil (57) located within the housing (12). A ring of back iron (58) is carried by the impeller casing (14) to aid in completing a flux return path for the permanent magnets (54). A plurality of hydrodynamic thrust bearings are located outside of the axis of rotation of the rotor (17). The impeller (19) uses large axially thick blade sectors (49) with narrow blood channels (51) extending through the impeller (19), to minimize hemolysis and to increase the working surface of the blades (49).
