    • Determining a communication interface 151, 152, to use on a multi-mode device 100, comprising: receiving an event that requires a communication activity of the device; determining a communication interface to use according to a prioritization received in configuration information that specifies the order to be used; and, responsive to determining that at least one communication interface in the prioritization is active/enabled, using the active communication interface to complete the communication activity. Provides the ability for machine-to-machine (M2M) devices and portable user devices to switch between cellular, Wi-FiRTM and satellite technology to ensure network connectivity based on a priority order. Embodiments of the present invention describe the ability to designate a prioritized list of communication modes and to manually configure communication modes directly on the device or remotely over the air via a technology such as e-mail, Short Message Service (SMS), or forward command over-the-air. Also disclosed is the ability to configure communication modes according to a geo-fence prioritization. Configuration information may also comprise an alternative prioritisation specifying the order in which communication interfaces are to be used when motion of the device is detected.

    • Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure from an indicia reader configured to read UV sensitive security marks is limited by determining that an item has one or more UV-sensitive security marks, activating a UV light source to read the UV-sensitive security marks, and if a UV exposure risk is detected, then deactivating the UV light source. The exposure risk may include the expiration of a time period, detecting that the item is no longer visible in the indicia readers field of view, or the detection of an object adversely affected by UV light, e.g. a human or human body part. The indicia reader 1 may be configured with two illumination light sources: a primary light source 30 for illuminating primary indicia (e.g., a barcode) 3 and a secondary ultraviolet (UV) light source 40 for revealing secondary indicia (e.g., UV fluorescent watermarks) 4 used to protect against counterfeit and fraud. The primary indicia may provide information that classifies the item, and the secondary light source may only be activated if the items class matches a class stored in the readers memory 60.

    • A smart scan peripheral is capable of attaching to a mobile computing device (e.g., a smartphone) allowing the resulting combination to be used like a traditional gun scanner. The scan handle peripheral does not require a power source or any electrical connection to the mobile computing device but can operate to still relay trigger pull information to a running application on the mobile computing device. This scan handle peripheral makes use of a magnetometer found in the mobile computing device by moving a magnet into the vicinity of the electromagnetic field generated by the magnetometer. As the handle magnet enters the magnetic field around the magnetometer, a software application in the processor of the mobile computing device monitoring the magnetometer readings and when a disruption is detected, a trigger event is sent to the processor to trigger an operation such as a barcode scanning event. In an alternative embodiment, a passive near field communication (NFC) tag 600 is mounted on an actuator which slides into a readable position of an NFC reader on the mobile computing device to cause a trigger event.

    • A smart-scan peripheral 200 is capable of attaching to a mobile computing device (e.g., a smartphone, 100) allowing the resulting combination to be used like a traditional gun scanner. The peripheral comprises housing 202, platform 202b, actuator 207 and trigger 205. The scan handle peripheral does not require a power source or any electrical connection to the mobile computing device but can operate to relay trigger pull information to an application on the mobile computing device. This peripheral makes use of a magnetometer 124 found in the mobile computing device by moving a magnet 206 into the vicinity of the magnetometer. As the handle magnet enters the field around the magnetometer, an application running in the mobile computing device detects a disruption, and an operation such as a barcode scanning event is triggered. In an alternative embodiment, a passive near field communication (NFC) tag 600 is mounted on the actuator which slides into a readable position of an NFC reader on the mobile computing device to cause a trigger event.
