    • Disclosed is a control device that is used for an internal combustion engine and capable of making various requests concerning the performance of the internal combustion engine be reflected in a target control amount value while the requests need not be expressed in the form of a requested control amount value. The control device acquires various requests concerning the performance of the internal combustion engine and sets a request-specific constraint on a control amount value. More specifically, the control device expresses constraints to be set for control amount values as a set of constraint index values assigned to individual control amount values, and varies the distribution of the constraint index values assigned to the control amount values in accordance with the type of a request. Next, the control device integrates, for each control amount value, the constraint index values assigned to individual requests with respect to each control amount value. Then, in accordance with the distribution of the integrated constraint index value for a control amount, the control device determines a limitation of the control amount, which is defined by an upper-limit value and a lower-limit value. The control device determines a target control amount value within the determined limitation.

    • An object of this invention is, with respect to a torque-demand-control type controller that subjects two kinds of actuators provided upstream and downstream in an intake passage to coordinated operations based on a requested torque for an internal combustion engine, to enable realization of a pulse-like torque change in a torque decreasing direction that is requested, for example, when performing an upshift operation in an electronically controlled automatic transmission. To achieve this object, according to a controller for an internal combustion engine of this invention, when a pulse component in a torque decreasing direction is included in a requested torque, a second requested torque that does not include the pulse component is generated. In this case, a first actuator provided on the downstream side in the intake passage is operated based on the requested torque. On the other hand, although a second actuator provided on the upstream side in the intake passage is operated based on the requested torque when there is not a valid value of the second requested torque, the second actuator is operated based on the second requested torque when there is a valid value of the second requested torque.

Although the control unit of the present invention usually determines the required torque as a target torque, the control unit determines a value lower than the current torque when a reduction direction change occurs in the required torque while there is the gap between the required torque and the current torque. Desirably, the control unit determines a target torque reduction correspondingly to a decrease in the required torque, and determines a target torque reduction subtracted from the current torque as the target torque. The control unit calculates a target air volume from the determined target torque, and calculates the target throttle divergence by using the air reverse model and based on the target air volume.

    • A control device for an internal combustion engine provided by the present invention is a control device which can satisfy both a requirement relating to exhaust gas performance of the internal combustion engine and a requirement relating to operation performance by properly regulating a change speed of a required air-fuel ratio, in the internal combustion engine which uses torque and an air-fuel ratio as control variables. When a predetermined reduction condition is not satisfied, an original required air-fuel ratio is directly determined as a final required air-fuel ratio. However, when the reduction condition is satisfied, the change speed is reduced by processing the signal of the original required air-fuel ratio, and determines the required air-fuel ratio with the change speed reduced as the final required air-fuel ration. The reduction condition includes a condition that the change amount of the original required air-fuel ratio, in more detail, a change amount per calculation period is larger than a predetermined air-fuel ratio change determination value.
