    • Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, are provided for selecting between a device-to-device link or a 2-hop cellular link In one aspect there is provided a method. The method may include monitoring, at a user equipment, a paging signal, the paging signal including a random access preamble index assigned to another user equipment. The user equipment may be configured to use the random access preamble index assigned to the another user equipment, and receive a signal comprising a random access preamble. The user equipment may measure the received signal to generate an indication representative of a quality of the received signal. Based on the indication rather than a dedicated probe, a determination may be made regarding whether to establish a first connection directly to the another user equipment. Related apparatus, systems, methods, and articles are also described.

    • To optimize the selection of pre-coding vectors in a multi-user MIMO system, the present invention provides a method for selecting pre-coding vectors in a base station, comprising the steps of: transmitting a plurality of pilot signals without being precoded to the plurality of terminals; receiving a plurality of feedback signals from the plurality of terminals, wherein at least one feedback signal includes a plurality of recommended pre-coding vector information and a plurality of channel status information, and each of the channel status information corresponds to a recommended pre-coding vector information; generate a pre-coding codebook based on the plurality feedback signals, wherein at least one pre-coding vector in the pre-coding codebook is determined based on a correlation coefficient between at least two recommended pre-coding vectors; and performing a transmission operation using the pre-coding codebook. Through considering the correlation among pre-coding vectors and different channel status information corresponding to different pre-coding vectors, be used to extend the selection range of pre-coding vectors and improve the total transmission rate of the whole system and system capacity.

    • Disclosed herein are systems and methods for communicating a number of data flows on a single communications channel. In one embodiment, a method of communicating a number of data flows on a shared communications channel includes the acts of (1) calculating a set of optimum goodput rates for the data flows, in order to maximize a total utility of the data flows, (2) calculating a set of optimum throughput rates for the data flows based on the optimum goodput rates, and (3) transmitting the data flows on the shared communications channel with the optimized throughput rates. Optimization is preferably done using utility functions that indicate the utility of the data flows as a function of their goodput rates. The method can additionally block temporarily a transport layer of at least one of the data flows if the transport layer of that data flow is bottlenecked.
