    • A superconducting generator is disclosed herein and includes a super cooled rotor assembly and two interconnected torque tubes constructed of a material having a thermal coefficient of linear expansion which is negligible at and below a predetermined cryogenic temperature. During normal operation of the generator, predetermined axial sections of these torque tubes are maintained at or below this cryogenic temperature. This minimizes thermal expansion of these sections and eliminates damage therefrom should the generator operate in an abnormal way which causes the torque tube sections to drop significantly in temperature. At the same time, other axial sections of the torque tubes are maintained at temperatures above this cryogenic temperature during normal operation of the generator but are coupled to an external source of heat to minimize any drop in temperature of these sections during abnormal operation.

    • A mixed phase pump for rapidly rotating cryogenic machinery is disclosed, preferably for installation to a superconducting generator rotor. The superconducting generator rotor includes an inner and outer rotor structure joined in a thermally insulated configuration not unlike that of a Dewar flask. The inner rotor contains a support cylinder for a refrigerant, typically helium, which when refrigerated to 3.5.degree. Kelvin at one half a standard atmosphere under the normal rapid rotation of the axially aligned support cylinder, classifies itself into a two-phase liquid gas system. The phases include an outer cylindrical helium pool and an axially inward gaseous core separated by a cylindrical gas-liquid interface. During normal operation of the rapidly revolving rotor, a pump removes the gas for recooling to a liquid state by receiving the gas in the vicinity of the axis of the rotor at an inlet. During abnormal operation including stator short-circuit and rapid rotational vibrational acceleration and deceleration of the rotor, the normal cylindrical interface between the cylindrical helium pool and the vapor core is destroyed. The vapor core in the vicinity of the pump inlet becomes multiphasic and the pump inlet can induct/ingest quantities of liquid. Accordingly, a pump with the liquid gas classification volume located outwardly from the gas inlet to the pump is disclosed. This liquid trap volume in the pump assures that the outward passage of gas only from the pump occurs. Stability of the two-phase gas-liquid system as well as the prevention of thermal stressing of torque-transmitting members of the high speed rotating rotor is prevented.

    • A relatively rotatable coupling apparatus is disclosed for conveying fluid from a stationary reservoir to a rotatable member. An adjustable throttle valve is operably connected intermediate of the coupling apparatus and the rotatable member for controlling the flow of fluid from the reservoir to the rotatable member. The relatively rotatable coupling apparatus has a first conduit portion connected to the reservoir defining an inlet flow path and a second conduit portion connected to the rotatable member defining a discharge flow path for the fluid. The first and second conduit portions are interconnected in an overlapping radially spaced apart relation by rotatable interconnecting means to define a relative motion gap betwen the overlapping portions and to permit rotational movement of the second conduit portion relative to the first conduit portion. The throttle valve has a valve seat disposed in the discharge flow path of the second conduit portion and a valve plug disposed intermediate of the valve seat and the rotatable member. Provisions are made for axially displacing the valve plug relative to the valve seat to provide adjustable throttling of the flow of fluid from the reservoir to the rotatable member.
