    • A camera and interchangeable lenses for such camera in which it is automatically detected whether or not the lens mounted on the camera has an automatic focusing capability. If it does, respective sets of electrical contacts provided on the lens and camera body are employed to transmit and receive a series of different data between the camera body and the lens. If it does not, the only a single datum is transmitted, for example, an open lens-stop value of the lens, is transmitted over the two sets of contacts. An automatic focusing actuation voltage applied from the camera body can be sensed to determine whether or not the lens has the automatic focusing capability.

    • An automatic exposure camera of the stop value control type is provided with lens stop braking to improve the accuracy of the lens stopping operation while at the same time maintaining a high operating speed. A brake magnet mechanism is provided for decelerating the lens stopping mechanism in response to a control circuit. In one form, the control circuit operates the brake magnet mechanism to effect deceleration slightly before the quantity of light reaches a suitable exposure value. Thereafter, when a stop value providing a suitable exposure value is obtained, stopping the lens stopping operation can be done with very high accuracy. In another form, the control circuit compares the variation in light due to the change in aperture with a variation rate to control the energization and de-energization of the brake magnet. In this way, the non-linear operation which is particularly evident at minimal aperture values is eliminated.

    • New methods for phase contrast imaging in transmission electron microscopy use the imaging electron beam itself to prepare a hole-free thin film for use as an effective phase plate, in some cases eliminating the need for ex-situ fabrication of a hole and reducing requirements for the precision of the ZPP hardware. The electron optical properties of the ZPP hardware are modified primarily in two ways: by boring a hole using the electron beam; and/or by modifying the electro-optical properties by charging induced by the primary beam. Furthermore a method where the sample is focused by a lens downstream from the ZPP hardware is disclosed. A method for transferring a back focal plane of the objective lens to a selected area aperture plane and any plane conjugated with the back focal plane of the objective lens is also provided.
